Sophie stared at Eugene up and down when he came to pick up Hannah in the afternoon. Feeling like a teenager being scrutinized by their parents after spending a night at a friend's place, Eugene feigned calmness while his palms were sweating — not from the heat.
"What?" Eugene asked when the gaze didn't leave him even after five minutes, when the children were running upstairs to pack Hannah's stuff.
"I'm smelling something," Sophie stroked her chin.
"Strawberries?" Eugene shrugged--a not-so-random shot since he had been snacking on strawberries while driving from Arthur's apartment to Sophie's place.
There was no way it was pheromone, right? They had scrubbed themselves clean in the shower, abusing the neutralizer, and wore clean clothes--
Oh.
"Did you take a shower?" Sophie asked with a smirk after the shift in Eugene's expression.
"It was...hot," Eugene averted her gaze. "I was sweating too much."
"I'm sure you were."
