Chapter 95: Prom Night - The Calm

Caroline looks stunning in the blue dress that appeared on her doorstep three days ago with a note reading "Anonymous admirer who appreciates true beauty."
We both know Klaus sent it. Caroline accepted it to avoid drama, and honestly, his taste is impeccable—the dress captures her perfectly.
"I know you're tracking six clone positions mentally while dancing with me," Caroline says as we sway to some pop song the prom committee selected.
I smile guiltily. "Sensory clone detected nothing yet. Can I have this dance without apocalypse?"
She pulls me closer, resting her head against my shoulder. "For now, yes. Just us, dancing, being normal teenagers before everything changes."
Around us, three hundred students dance and laugh and take selfies, completely unaware that my Phasing clone is positioned at the exits, my Defensive Shield clone is calculating maximum barrier coverage, and my Mind Shield clone is stationed with Bonnie in case Shane attempts mass compulsion.
Matt grabs our attention, gesturing toward the photographer. "Group photo! All of us before we graduate and scatter!"
Elena, Stefan, Caroline, Matt, Tyler, Bonnie, and I gather together, smiling for the camera like we're not expecting Expression-powered massacre any minute.
"We survived four years of high school," Matt jokes. "We can survive anything."
Tyler catches my eye—he knows exactly how literally true that statement is for our group.
The photographer captures us frozen in that moment: seven teenagers who've faced Original vampires, hybrid transformations, and thousand-year-old family conflicts, pretending to be normal for one perfect evening.
Outside the gymnasium, Klaus watches from concealment with Elijah and his four hybrid pack members.
My Sensory clone picks up their conversation despite the distance.
"She's happy with him," Elijah observes.
Klaus acknowledges it with surprising grace. "She is. But happiness fades. Eternity doesn't. When Caroline's ready to transcend mortality, I'll offer her forever."
Then Klaus's expression shifts—predator sensing prey.
"Brother, we have company. Multiple supernatural signatures approaching, masked by magic."
My Sensory clone confirms it simultaneously, counting the approaching threats.
Fifteen vampires moving with coordinated precision. Five witches radiating compelled magical energy. And Shane himself, blazing with Expression power built from months of death sacrifices.
The attack begins.
I squeeze Caroline's hand, pulling her close for one last kiss. "I love you. When it starts, stay with Bonnie."
"Sam—"
The gymnasium lights flicker. Every door slams shut simultaneously with magical force that reverberates through my bones.
Students notice, confusion rippling through the crowd.
Then the windows explode inward as fifteen vampires crash through glass in synchronized assault.
