Through the blinding radiance, Zhou Yi could clearly see the figure within.
Three pairs of massive, snow-white wings either spread wide or folded close, shielding the figure. The simple white linen robe he wore exuded a singular, profound sense of sanctity.
His exquisite face was devoid of joy or sorrow, so perfectly neutral that not even a hint of gender could be discerned. His lowered eyelids revealed only an otherworldly coldness and emptiness, as if he possessed neither personality nor emotion. This was an angel from myth—a being recognizable at a single glance.
The angel soon descended toward the ground, yet he did not land. Instead, he hovered in mid-air, his bare feet dangling. His great wings flapped gently, granting him the ability to move through the sky. As he did so, a unique divine power surged through the air, causing the faint, distant voices to grow clearer.
Zhou Yi recognized the sound. It was the same one that echoed through the church every Sunday—a chorus of voices praising God. Yet, compared to the hymns of mortals, this sound was infinitely clearer, more melodious, and more soul-stirring.
A devout believer would have fallen to their knees by now, overwhelmed with gratitude for God's grace. But the only person here was Zhou Yi, and he was the very definition of a skeptic.
"Who are you?" Zhou Yi asked, stepping forward to examine the angel.
The angel's gender was ambiguous, neither male nor female. Its presence here, at this exact moment, raised a multitude of questions. Was it a trap set by Jehovah? Or was it the guardian of the seal? Why had it appeared now? These were questions Zhou Yi needed to answer.
"Mortal," the angel declared. "I am Archangel Ulilal, servant of my Lord. By His divine decree, I guard the seal of the night demon Lilith. Mortal, you have defied His holy command by bringing a defiled object of the demons near His sacred seal. Withdraw, and I may yet forgive your transgression. Otherwise, you will face my Lord's punishment!"
The Archangel Ulilal's expression remained impassive, yet the words he spoke were, to Zhou Yi, an arrogant threat.
Almost immediately, Zhou Yi's lips curled into a wide grin. He strode forward, stepping through the void. After just a few steps, he was already before the angel, facing him directly.
"Forgive my sins? Punish me?" Zhou Yi sneered. "Come on then. I'm right here. Let me see how your Lord punishes me. Or how you'll defend your Lord's honor."
At these words, Ulilal's lowered eyelids snapped open. Though his still, silver-gray eyes betrayed no emotion, the divinity boiling in the air around him testified to the angel's fury.
"Blasphemy!" he roared, his voice ringing out like a great bell. "You faithless mortal, you dare blaspheme my Lord! You will be cast into the Abyss!"
But Zhou Yi was not one to be intimidated by such threats. He roared with laughter as the divinity coursing through his body erupted, surging like a boundless tsunami that repeatedly crashed within the confined space. The deafening roar seemed to penetrate the very depths of the soul.
Intertwining flames also erupted from Zhou Yi's body, weaving together to form a cloak of fire that enveloped him in a brilliant golden radiance.
He said no more, for words were no longer needed. Zhou Yi thrust his hand toward Ulilal. In an instant, the void shattered, and endless divine fire materialized as several ferocious Fire Dragons that tore through the void, lunging and clawing at Ulilal.
Faced with this sudden, violent assault, Ulilal abruptly spread his three pairs of wings. The scattering feathers, radiating a holy light, instantly formed a shimmering protective shield around him as he sought to block the Fire Dragons' attack. Simultaneously, a golden spear began to materialize in his hand.
Evidently, he was confident in his own strength and was already planning a counterattack. But in reality, he would never get the chance.
The dazzlingly bright protective shield that had just flared up failed to offer even a moment's defense. It was instantly pierced through by the ferocious Fire Dragon. Its gaping maw clamped down in a single instant, tearing into Ulilal's body and the broad wings at his back.
Feathers scattered, countless pinions turning to ash in the Fire Dragon's raging flames. Though Zhou Yi's command had prevented the dragon's sharp, fiery fangs from shredding Ulilal's body, they still sank deep into his flesh, charring most of his internal tissues to cinders.
Trapped in the Fire Dragon's jaws, Ulilal resembled a tattered rag doll. The golden spear he had summoned was now a mere ornament, left hanging uselessly in the air. Yet even in this state, the angel's expression remained unchanged, let alone any screams of agony.
This left Zhou Yi feeling like something was missing. It wasn't that he had become so twisted that he craved to hear someone's agonized wails, but rather that Ulilal's reaction was simply not that of a sentient being. If he had to make a comparison, Zhou Yi felt the angel was more like an AI.
If Jehovah's angels were all this kind of trash, then he would have to seriously re-evaluate his opinion of the so-called God. With subordinates like this, one could only imagine what kind of bastard God himself must be.
The so-called Archangels were the highest rank of the middle-tier angels, second only to the divine Seraphs, Cherubs, and Thrones. In mythology, these divine angels held extraordinary status, no lesser than the major gods of other pantheons. Even a Seraph like Lucifer had a record of rebelling against God and falling to Hell.
Therefore, Archangels were already the most elite servants under Jehovah's command. In theistic culture, they were known as God's messengers, tasked with executing His will and overseeing the angelic precepts. In a sense, they were Jehovah's inner circle.
So, when his inner circle faced a grave threat, what would Jehovah, their master, do? The moment this thought crossed Zhou Yi's mind, the answer automatically materialized before his eyes.
The golden spear, which had been poised in the air, suddenly swung around and hurtled toward Zhou Yi. The dazzling holy light on its tip materialized into a solid ribbon, and the whistling wind of its flight transformed into a vortex that seemed to sweep across all creation. In an instant, an unparalleled might erupted, making it clear that this spear possessed the divine power to pierce all things.
Yes, divine power. At this moment, Zhou Yi keenly sensed that a force far more powerful than the Archangel's had intervened. This force was controlling the golden spear and launching an attack on him. Judging by its sheer power, it was absolutely intent on killing him.
However, the result was far from what the attacker had hoped for. Faced with the seemingly formidable spear, Zhou Yi threw a punch. The Golden Divine Fire immediately enveloped his fist as it met the spear's tip. The moment they collided, the spear began to disintegrate from its point of impact, shattering completely until not a single fragment remained. Both the holy light and the spear's remnants were utterly incinerated by the flames on Zhou Yi's hand.
This was clearly unexpected for the one who had struck from the shadows. Almost immediately, the divinity belonging to this being began to withdraw. At the same time, a pillar of light descended from the heavens, illuminating Ulilal's mangled remains. The brilliant holy light seeped into his body through his facial orifices, causing his form to radiate a blinding glow.
The next moment, Ulilal's wings abruptly disintegrated, and a sphere of bright light erupted from his chest. It ascended directly along the pillar of light. As for the mangled corpse, without the support of its divinity, it was instantly incinerated by the Fire Dragon.
"Trying to run!" Seeing this, Zhou Yi instantly understood the trick. He roared, abruptly slowing the flow of time.
The rapidly ascending streak of light instantly turned into heavy mercury, slowing to an unimaginable degree. With this advantage, Zhou Yi immediately charged forward.
He reached the sphere of bright light that Ulilal had transformed into, punched straight through its luminous barrier, and yanked the sphere out. Simultaneously, his other hand pierced through the endless void, tracing the pillar of light directly back to its source.
He had already spotted the figure hiding in the shadows—a creature that looked like a mass of light and shadow. It seemed to be trying to escape, which made Zhou Yi sneer. *Since I've already found you, how could I let you slip away so easily?*
His five fingers instantly pierced through the void, plunging deep into the light and shadow. Immediately, Zhou Yi felt as if he had touched something existing between the physical and the ethereal. Purely physical contact seemed to cause it no interference or harm. The moment he applied force, this entity—this thing caught between reality and illusion—immediately dissipated through his fingers like light and shadow.
This situation left Zhou Yi stunned for a moment, but he quickly understood and immediately channeled the power of divinity into his hand. Ordinary physical contact was useless, but once divinity intervened, the situation changed instantly.
Zhou Yi's divinity acted like a natural enemy, suppressing the mass of light and shadow. With a slight exertion of force, he gouged out a large chunk of it. Suddenly, a sound like the screams of thousands of people erupted from the light and shadow.
At that exact moment, Zhou Yi's Time Slowdown reached its end, allowing the mass of light and shadow to escape his grasp with incredible speed. It seemed to slip into a dimension beyond his perception, completely shielding itself from his tracking.
However, it had clearly forgotten about Ulilal—or rather, it had abandoned him. Faced with its own survival, the creature of light and shadow had callously discarded the unfortunate angel.
But that wasn't what mattered. What mattered was: *Who* was this being of light and shadow?
Zhou Yi opened his palm, revealing the fragment he had torn away. As he infused it with his divinity, the light and shadow began to solidify into a tangible form.
It became a wing—a wing torn out by the root. A jade-like luster flowed across its surface, making it appear as if it were carved from a single piece of emerald.
*Who could it be?*
Staring at the wing, Zhou Yi sank into thought. Soon, he found the answer in the mythological texts he had been studying.
