Chapter 151 - The Chrono-Pendulum

The Mass-Distribution Chamber was behind them, and for the first time, the Archive ship felt light—dangerously light. But as they drifted deeper into the Sub-Strata, the very air began to "stutter." A drop of oil from a leaking pipe would fall halfway to the floor, freeze for three seconds, and then teleport to the ground in a spray of grey pixels.

[LOCATION: THE TEMPORAL_GEARBOX]

[STATUS: FRAME-RATE DROPPING (60fps to 0.5fps)]

[NOTICE: TIME-STUTTER DETECTED]

"It's the second Governor," Mateo said, his voice sounding like a slowed-down vinyl record. "The 'Chrono-Pendulum'. It's the... master... clock... of... the... machine."

In the center of a cathedral-sized hall of brass and glass, a single, mile-long arm of glowing white energy swung back and forth. But it wasn't a smooth motion. A massive, rusted "Escapement-Wheel" held the pendulum back, forcing it to "Click" only once every ten subjective minutes.

[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE CHRONO-CENSORS]

The Censors were tall, spindly figures with hourglasses for heads. They moved in "Fast-Forward" while everything else was in "Slow-Motion." To Kenji, they were nothing but blurs of grey robes and shattering glass.

"They're... 'Lagging'... us!" Elara yelled, her frost-spell taking an entire minute to leave her fingertips. By the time the ice formed, the Censors had already moved ten feet to the left.

"They've 'Under-clocked' our existence," Kenji growled. His own thoughts felt sluggish, like he was thinking through a thick layer of digital sludge. "They want us to live in the 'Past' while they control the 'Future'."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE OVER-CLOCKER'S HEART]

Kenji didn't try to move fast. He realized that the "Clock-Speed" of the room was tied to the Escapement-Wheel. He looked at his Independent Variable. It wasn't just a wrench anymore; it was a "Bridge" to the Core, and the Core was outside of time.

"I'm not... waiting... for... the... tick!" Kenji roared.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE ASYNCHRONOUS_STRIKE]

Kenji ignored the "Frame-Rate" of the room. He reached back to his true self in the nebula—the "Source-Drive" that didn't need a pendulum to exist. He pulled the "Un-used Time" of every person who had ever died in the Gutter—the hours they spent waiting for a break, the seconds they spent hoping for a better life.

He didn't swing the wrench. He "Inserted" the strike into a future frame.

CRACK.

The wrench hit the Escapement-Wheel not now, but next Tuesday. The shockwave traveled backward through the timeline, shattering the rusted gears that held the Pendulum back.

[NOTICE: CHRONO-GOVERNOR RELEASED]

[STATUS: REFRESH-RATE RESTORED TO 'UNLIMITED']

The mile-long arm of starlight suddenly swung with a resonant, musical WHOOSH. The "Slow-Motion" effect vanished. The Chrono-Censors, caught in a sudden surge of "Real-Time," couldn't handle the speed. Their hourglass heads shattered, spilling "Stale-Time" across the floor like beach sand.

"We're... moving normally!" Priya gasped, her healing mana now flowing with a vibrant, instantaneous pulse.

"No," Kenji said, looking at his hands. "We're moving at the 'Gutter-Speed'. We're moving as fast as we need to."

Across the multiverse, the "Unranked" suddenly found they had "More Time." The hours in the factory didn't feel like eons anymore. The "Latency" of their lives had been deleted. They could see the Archive's moves before they even happened.

"Two down," Kenji panted, his avatar flickering with a new, high-frequency energy. "Four to go. Mateo, find me the Governor of Heat. I can feel the 'Thermal-Throttling' starting again."

[NEW LOCATION: THE THERMO-STAT]
