The stall owner looked at her and smiled. He pulled a cigarette from its pack, struck a match to light it, and took a drag. "It's not my car," he said. "You want to buy it? Ask the bookseller around the corner. He collects books from all over the place, so he knows people."
Cecilia Adler thanked him and walked over to the bookstall.
Once there, she squatted down and began flipping through the books.
She hadn't read many books and didn't recognize characters with numerous strokes.
She didn't know what kind of books would be worth the money.
After carefully deliberating, she picked out two thick, hardcover books. One was titled *Comprehensive English-Chinese Dictionary*, and the other was *Chinese-Russian Mutual Translation*.
'Once I finish these,' she thought, 'I should be able to understand foreign countries.'
'Know your enemy and know yourself, and you will never be defeated.'
