"Oh, you shouldn't have!" Mrs. Lewis accepted them gleefully. "You bought these at the shop on the street corner, didn't you? They must have cost fifty or sixty cents, right? Next time, don't buy from there. The fried dough and pastries at the black market are much cheaper."

"Even if they're cheaper, I wouldn't dare go," Cecilia Adler said, putting extra emphasis on the word 'dare'.

"There's nothing to be afraid of just buying things. If you get caught, you just lower your head, take a few words of criticism, and they let you go." Mrs. Lewis took out an iron wok and a kitchen knife she had scored at the black market. "I heard these are cast-offs from the factory. Almost half the price of what they sell for at the department store."

Cecilia Adler hefted the wok. It was heavy.

So was the kitchen knife.

'This would definitely be good for chopping meat.' "My family happens to need a good kitchen knife. Which black market did you get this from? I'd like to check it out, too."
