In the second-floor study, Nathan Redgrave stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, white smoke clouding his deep, dark eyes. He watched until Hannah Hale was inside the house before turning to walk to his desk, stubbing out his cigarette, and heading out.
Mrs. Miller came out of the kitchen and greeted Hannah Hale with a warm smile. "Ma'am, you're back. Dinner is ready."
"Mrs. Miller, I already ate out. You all go ahead and eat. I'm just going to go to my room and rest."
Hannah Hale changed her shoes in the entryway. With a weary look, she spoke to Mrs. Miller before heading upstairs.
Nathan Redgrave emerged from the study and grabbed Hannah Hale's wrist, his gaze complex. "Just how badly do you want to avoid me? Or did you go out to eat with that boyfriend of yours again?"
"Mr. Redgrave, I don't need to report my private affairs to you. Now, please let go."
