Vera Xavier turned her head to look at Nathaniel Nathan, her gaze meeting his deep eyes. Her heart skipped a beat.
He reached out and pulled her into his arms. "The principle is this," he said. "I'm the one you can rely on for the rest of your life. No matter what happens, you'll always have a fallback. You'll always have me."
'Vera had always thought that a man like Nathaniel Nathan wouldn't understand romance, nor would he know how to say sweet nothings.'
'But now she realized just how ridiculously wrong she had been. When he did say something romantic, it was devastatingly effective. This sentence, at least, had hit the bullseye of her heart.'
Her eyes reddened slightly. "Okay," she said softly, "I'll remember that."
Nathaniel Nathan reached out and caressed her face. She gave him a small smile and asked, "How's Grandpa?"
