As everyone watched, Holly Winslow blew out the candles, cut the first piece of cake, and gave it to Gabe Chaucer at the back of the classroom. "Teacher Chaucer, this is for you."
Gabe Chaucer accepted it graciously, taking the cake with a smile. "Happy eighteenth birthday. I hope you'll always be happy."
"Thank you, Teacher." Holly Winslow smiled genuinely.
Gabe Chaucer knew the students wouldn't be able to relax with him around, so he picked up his cake and headed back to his office. Before leaving, he added, "Make sure you clean up the classroom before evening self-study starts."
The implication was that they could have their fun for now, but they had to get serious when it was time to study.
Senior year was tough, after all. He might as well let them have their fun for once.
As soon as the back door closed, the boys went wild and started a cake fight.
