Chapter 29: The Final Snare
The flames in the corridor had begun to die down.
Ash drifted slowly through the air as the last explosions faded into silence.
Small pieces of burned wood fell from broken branches while smoke continued to rise from the shattered ground.
In the middle of the scorched battlefield stood Aburame Torune.
His posture remained straight and composed.
Around him, the Rinkaichū insects slowly spread across the surrounding rocks and trees. They moved carefully, scanning the battlefield again and again.
Even after the earlier explosions, the swarm had not been completely destroyed.
There were still more than enough insects to form a defensive cloud around him.
Across the battlefield, Uchiha Kenzo stood calmly.
Neither of them moved.
For several seconds, the battlefield remained completely still.
Both shinobi observed each other.
Measuring.
Calculating.
Each of them understood that the other was extremely dangerous.
Torune moved first.
The insects began crawling across the ground and up the surrounding rocks, attempting to pinpoint Kenzo's position more precisely.
But the battlefield was still filled with drifting ash and lingering smoke.
The earlier explosions had turned the entire area into chaos.
Kenzo had clearly done this on purpose.
Torune stepped forward slowly.
"Your traps were well prepared," he said calmly.
His tone carried neither anger nor praise.
It was simply an observation.
"But they were not enough."
He paused briefly before speaking again.
"Come back to Konoha with us."
"Perhaps the Hokage and the Hokage adviser will be lenient with you."
Naturally, these were only probing words.
Torune was trying to buy time.
Even a short conversation during battle could reveal something about an opponent's intentions.
But Kenzo did not respond.
His mind remained as calm as still water.
Those words had no effect on him.
Instead, he simply stepped backward.
One step.
Then another.
Gradually retreating deeper into the forest.
Torune narrowed his eyes slightly.
For a moment, he hesitated.
It was obvious that Kenzo was planning something.
Every action since the beginning of the chase had been deliberate.
The traps.
The explosions.
The terrain.
Nothing had been random.
But Torune also remembered his own backup plan.
Because of that, he quickly regained his confidence.
More importantly—
He had no real choice.
If he stopped pursuing now, Kenzo would gain distance again.
And everything would return to where it started.
The long chase.
The endless traps.
Allowing that to happen would only waste more time.
So Torune moved forward.
The two shinobi advanced deeper into the burned forest.
The ground beneath their feet was unstable and covered in ash.
Broken branches and charred tree trunks surrounded them.
Soon the forest opened into a small clearing.
The trees around it were blackened from earlier fires, and the ground was covered with a thick layer of gray ash.
Kenzo stopped at the center of the clearing.
Torune followed.
The insects spread outward again.
They scanned every part of the battlefield.
Every rock.
Every tree.
Every movement.
Then suddenly—
Kenzo moved.
His hand flicked forward with sharp precision.
A single kunai flew through the air and struck the ground near the edge of the clearing.
The moment it landed—
The ground lit up.
Four sealing tags hidden beneath the ash activated at the same time.
Lines of glowing symbols spread across the ground like veins.
The formation connected instantly.
A faint barrier rose around the clearing.
Torune noticed it immediately.
Until now, Torune had remained completely calm during the battle.
Even when Kenzo used traps and explosions to disrupt their pursuit, Torune had never lost his composure.
His mind had always remained steady.
But now—
For the first time since the battle began—
Torune felt his heart beat faster.
Not because he was trapped.
But because of what he had just seen.
The Uchiha Clan was not known for advanced sealing techniques.
At most, they possessed only basic knowledge.
Yet somehow—
Kenzo had used a sealing formation.
That fact alone made Torune uneasy.
Up until now, Torune believed he understood his opponent.
But this—
This was something unexpected.
And facing the unknown was always dangerous.
For a brief moment, Torune froze.
At the same time—
The Rinkaichū insects around him slowed.
Their movements became unstable.
Torune immediately realized why.
The barrier was draining chakra from the area.
And the insects relied on chakra to function.
Without sufficient chakra—
Their speed and coordination dropped.
Kenzo stepped forward slowly.
The roles had completely reversed.
The one who had been chased had now become the hunter.
"This battlefield was prepared for you."
Torune quickly forced himself to calm down again.
Years of combat experience helped him regain control of his thoughts.
"So you expected me to follow."
Kenzo nodded slightly.
"From the moment you entered the burned forest."
Torune looked around the clearing again.
Everything made sense now.
The earlier traps had not been meant to kill him.
They had been meant to guide him.
Step by step.
Until he reached this exact location.
The final trap.
Kenzo moved first.
His body suddenly blurred forward.
A kunai flashed toward Torune's chest.
The weakened insect swarm rushed forward to intercept—
But they were slower now.
Torune twisted his body, barely avoiding the strike.
Kenzo immediately followed with another attack.
Their weapons collided with a sharp metallic sound.
For the first time since the chase began—
They were fighting directly.
At close range.
Torune attempted to counterattack, but the sealing formation continued draining chakra from the surrounding area.
The Rinkaichū swarm struggled to keep up with Kenzo's speed.
Kenzo's eyes remained cold.
Focused.
His Sharingan spun slowly as he watched every movement Torune made.
This was the moment he had prepared for.
Delay.
Separate.
Isolate.
And now—
Kill.
Kenzo suddenly pulled a thin wire hidden beneath the ash.
The final part of the trap activated.
Dozens of explosive tags buried around the clearing ignited at the same time.
Torune's eyes widened slightly.
Boom!
A massive explosion erupted across the battlefield.
Flames shot into the sky as the entire clearing was consumed by fire.
The ground shook violently.
High above the battlefield, startled birds scattered into the night sky.
The forest trembled from the force of the blast.
Then slowly—
The flames began to settle.
Smoke drifted through the clearing.
Standing at the edge of the burning ground was Kenzo.
His breathing remained steady.
His Sharingan scanned the battlefield carefully.
Because even after such an explosion—
He knew better than to assume victory.
Not against someone like Torune.
The smoke shifted.
Something moved inside the burning clearing.
Kenzo's gaze sharpened.
A dark figure slowly stepped forward.
And through the smoke—
Aburame Torune was still standing.
