Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Ruthless Resolve

Chapter 30: Ruthless Resolve

As the dust slowly settled, the burning clearing fell into a tense silence.

Smoke drifted through the air, and broken branches still cracked faintly as the forest recovered from the explosion.

Within the fading smoke, a figure slowly became visible.

Aburame Torune.

His body was still standing, but barely.

The explosion had clearly taken its toll. His clothes were torn and scorched, and several injuries covered his body. Even though he had reacted in time, the blast had still battered him heavily.

The Rinkaichū insects around him moved sluggishly, their numbers greatly reduced by the chakra-suppressing formation beneath the clearing.

For the first time since the chase had begun—

Torune looked wounded.

But he was still standing.

And that alone made him dangerous.

The moment Torune's figure became clear through the smoke—

Kenzo moved.

He did not hesitate.

He did not observe.

He attacked.

Kenzo lunged forward with explosive speed, his kunai glinting coldly beneath the pale moonlight. The distance between them vanished in an instant.

Torune saw him coming.

Even injured, his instincts as an elite shinobi did not fail him.

His hand moved.

Clang!

Steel collided as Torune barely managed to block the strike with his own kunai.

The impact forced him a step backward.

His insects stirred violently, trying to protect their host, but the sealing formation beneath the clearing continued to drain chakra from the area. Their movements were slower, weaker.

Still—

Torune held on.

Just a little longer.

That thought settled firmly in his mind.

He only needed to delay.

His backup was already on the way.

Once they arrived—

The situation would reverse completely.

Kenzo would become the hunted once again.

Torune steadied his breathing and prepared to stall.

But Kenzo gave him no such opportunity.

Kenzo attacked again.

And again.

His movements were sharp and precise, each strike forcing Torune further onto the defensive. Sparks flashed repeatedly as their kunai clashed in rapid succession.

Torune's injuries were beginning to show.

His movements were slower.

His balance slightly unstable.

And Kenzo noticed every weakness.

The rhythm of the fight slowly shifted.

Kenzo subtly adjusted his movements, guiding the flow of combat without Torune realizing it. Each strike forced Torune to block from a slightly different angle. Each step pushed him into a more predictable stance.

Torune thought he was simply defending.

But Kenzo was shaping the moment.

Then Kenzo deliberately created a small opening.

It looked like a mistake.

A slight overextension.

Torune reacted immediately, turning to exploit it.

That was the moment Kenzo had been waiting for.

As Torune's head turned, their eyes met.

Kenzo's Sharingan spun slowly within the crimson of his eyes.

For a fraction of a second—

Torune's mind was caught.

The illusion was extremely small.

Not a deep genjutsu.

Not something complex.

Just a brief disruption.

For Torune, the battlefield seemed to stutter for an instant. The image of Kenzo split for a moment, his movement appearing slightly delayed.

That tiny distortion was enough.

Torune's body froze for a fraction of a second.

The illusion had taken hold.

Genjutsu.

Torune's mind fell into a brief daze.

Kenzo immediately lunged forward with lethal intent, his kunai aiming directly for Torune's head.

He knew he only had a few seconds before Torune would break free.

But that was enough.

Or at least—

It should have been.

Just as Kenzo's blade neared its target—

Torune's insects suddenly shrieked in agitation.

A warning.

Something was wrong.

Kenzo's Sharingan shifted instantly.

At the corner of his vision—

He saw another figure.

Yamanaka Fū.

Fū had arrived at the edge of the clearing, his hands already forming the seal of a technique.

Kenzo's mind moved at lightning speed.

If he continued his attack—

Fū would activate the Mind Body Switch Technique.

The moment Kenzo's consciousness was forced from his body, the genjutsu on Torune would collapse.

Torune would regain control instantly.

And Kenzo—

would die.

But if he stopped his attack—

Torune would break free from the genjutsu within seconds.

Then both of them would counterattack together.

That outcome would also mean death.

For a brief instant—

Kenzo had no winning move.

Meanwhile, moments earlier—

Fū had been moving through the forest at full speed.

A sense of unease had been growing in his mind.

Something feels wrong.

Torune being separated had already been unusual.

Then, while preparing to move, Fū noticed something inside his sleeve.

A small folded note.

He quickly opened it.

Inside were only four words.

Keep an eye on me.

Fū immediately understood.

Torune had anticipated the possibility of being targeted.

Without hesitation, Fū abandoned the rest of the squad and rushed forward alone.

That decision had brought him here—

Just in time.

Now, standing at the edge of the clearing, Fū prepared to launch the Mind Body Switch Technique.

All he needed—

Was a moment.

Back in the clearing—

Kenzo understood everything instantly.

Torune had prepared a backup plan.

Fū had arrived exactly when Torune needed him.

For a normal shinobi—

This situation would already be checkmate.

But Kenzo was not a normal shinobi.

There was still one move left.

One move that defied expectation.

Kenzo stepped forward instead of retreating.

His left hand suddenly grabbed Torune's collar and pulled him closer.

Torune's skin had already turned purple where the Rinkaichū insects had spread through his body.

Touching him directly was suicide.

Kenzo knew that.

The moment his hand made contact, the insects immediately began invading his arm.

His skin began to darken.

Pain shot through his nerves.

But Kenzo did not hesitate.

In his eyes—

There was no fear.

No doubt.

Only cold resolve.

He pulled Torune forward with brutal force.

At the same moment—

Fū released the Mind Body Switch Technique.

A thin stream of consciousness shot toward Kenzo.

But Kenzo moved faster.

With terrifying physical force—

His kunai swung.

Slash.

Torune's head separated from his body in a single clean motion.

The severed head flew into the air.

Only then did Torune's eyes regain clarity as the genjutsu broke.

For a brief moment—

Understanding filled them.

Now he understood why the Hokage had considered Kenzo such a dangerous existence.

It was not simply his talent.

Nor his intelligence.

It was something deeper.

Something far more frightening.

Kenzo was ruthless toward his enemies.

But he was even more ruthless—

Toward himself.

As Torune's head fell to the ground—

Silence returned to the clearing once more.
