Chapter 20 - Aftershocks and Awkwardness

The Silent Courtyard:

The "Gods" were being dragged away by Association medics like sacks of potatoes. The global broadcast had cut to static, leaving the entire world in a state of "System Error."

In the middle of the debris, Evelyn was still holding Alex's hand, her eyes locked on his face as if he were the only person left on Earth.

Serina: (Standing two feet away, watching them with a completely flat, judgmental expression) 😑

Serina's POV:

Wait... what am I seeing? Evelyn, the 'Ice Queen' of the Academy, the girl who rejected every S-Rank heir in the city... is currently holding my slacker brother's hand like she's a heroine in a romance novel. Is the world actually ending? Did I hit my head during the explosion?

The "Realization":

Evelyn suddenly felt a cold chill—not from the "Gods," but from Serina's piercing gaze. She looked down, realized she was basically clinging to Alex, and jumped back as if she'd been electrocuted.

Evelyn: (Face turning a shade of red that shouldn't be humanly possible) "I—I was just! The... the static electricity! Alex, you were glowing, so I was checking if you were... uh... highly conductive! For science!"

Alex: (Raising an eyebrow, smirking) "Science, huh? You were 'checking my conductivity' by holding my hand for three minutes?"

Evelyn: (Waving her hands frantically, her "Ice Queen" persona crumbling) "YES! Science is very thorough! Don't get the wrong idea! You're still a lazy, homework-avoiding idiot!"

Serina: (Walking over, whispering into Evelyn's ear) "Science? Really? You looked like you were about to ask him to name your first three kids."

Evelyn: "SERINA! SHUT UP!"

Evelyn immediately turned around, pretending to be very interested in a piece of gravel on the ground, desperately trying to "reboot" her cool emotions.

The Spy's Terror:

Nearby, Lucian was leaning against a wall, his knees shaking. He had his communicator out, but his fingers couldn't type.

Lucian's Thoughts: I thought he was a nobody. I thought he was just a 'companion' for the girls. He didn't use a spell. He didn't use a relic. He just... breathed. If the High Council tries to move against him... we aren't sending an army. We're sending a sacrifice.

The "Lazy" Routine Returns:

Allen: (Approaching with the last of the churros) "Anyway, now that the light show is over, we should probably get home. I want to see if the TV still works. If that lightning bolt fried the cable box, I'm going to go find those 'Alpha' guys and hit them myself."

Alex: "Good call. Serina, pick up my bag. Saving the world is exhausting; I think I pulled a muscle in my thumb."

Serina: (Back to her normal self) "You didn't save the world, you just bullied two middle-aged men in costumes! Pick up your own bag!"

The "Normal" Ending:

As they walked toward the exit, Principal David stepped in their way. He looked like he had aged ten years in ten minutes.

Principal David: "Alex... Allen... what exactly are you two?"

Alex: (Stopping for a second, then giving that classic, lazy grin) "We're just students, Principal. Students who really, really hate it when people ruin our lunch break."

Evelyn: (Walking a few steps behind, stealing a glance at Alex's back when no one was looking, her heart giving one final, stubborn thump) Liar. You're everything but 'just a student'.
