Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – I The first shadow

Raven remained standing at the heart of the circle, his eyes still fixed on the new line of light that had formed. It was not merely a simple line; it looked like a silent path stretching toward the unknown. The glow moved very slowly, almost imperceptibly, yet it was there—as if the circle itself was pointing toward something beyond its boundaries.

Raven lifted his foot slightly, then placed it back down.

He did not move yet.

Not out of fear… but thought.

The air around him had grown heavier, and the forest that had remained silent for so long now carried a different feeling. It was not a sound, nor a visible movement, but a subtle shift in the atmosphere. As if something far away had awakened.

Raven lowered his gaze again to the glowing line.

The path was clear.

But he did not know where it led.

He bent down slightly and took the stone from the center of the intersection. The moment he lifted it, the light of the circle dimmed for a brief instant before slowly returning. It did not vanish… but it grew quieter, as though its role in this moment had ended.

Raven stepped toward the edge.

The moment he crossed the outer boundary of the circle, something unexpected happened.

The glowing line behind him disappeared.

Not entirely, but it faded as though the light refused to remain for someone who did not follow it.

Raven turned back.

The circle was still there.

But it had become silent once again.

As if it had closed a door.

Then he looked forward.

The new line extended between the trees, a faint glow barely visible, yet clear enough to follow.

He began walking.

One slow step.

Then another.

The ground was slightly damp, covered with fallen leaves. The forest seemed deeper than he had imagined, as though the distance between the trees changed as he moved forward.

After several minutes of walking, he suddenly stopped.

Not because he was tired.

But because the feeling returned.

That feeling… that something was watching him.

He slowly raised his head.

The trees were still.

The wind was light.

But the forest was no longer empty.

Something… was there.

Raven narrowed his eyes slightly.

He tried to listen for any sound.

At first he heard nothing.

Then…

A small branch snapped somewhere in the distance.

A faint sound.

But clear.

Raven did not move.

He remained standing exactly where he was.

Moments passed.

Then another sound came.

This time closer.

It was not an ordinary animal.

The forest was full of animals, but he knew the difference between natural movement… and deliberate observation.

And this felt closer to observation.

He gripped the stone tightly in his hand.

He did not know why, but he felt that the stone mattered.

That the circle had not given it to him without reason.

More moments passed.

Then the shadow appeared.

Not a clear body.

Just movement between the trees.

Something dark moved quickly between two large trunks.

Raven's heart paused for a moment.

But he did not run.

The shadow vanished.

Then appeared again.

This time closer.

But what he saw was unclear.

It was not an animal… nor a human.

It was something between the two.

A tall, thin figure moving with unnatural silence.

And eyes.

Faint eyes reflecting almost no light.

The shadow stood between the trees watching him.

Raven did not move.

Even though his heart had begun beating faster.

Fear was there.

But it did not control him.

He remembered what he felt inside the circle.

He remembered the path.

And he remembered his decision.

I will not run.

The shadow moved one step.

Then stopped.

As if testing Raven's reaction.

A long silent moment passed.

Then something strange happened.

The glowing line beneath Raven's feet brightened slightly.

A small pulse.

Then another.

The shadow immediately froze.

Those pale eyes narrowed.

As if the light… disturbed it.

Raven noticed.

He did not understand why.

But instinct told him one thing.

The path given by the circle… was not just a path.

It was protection as well.

He took one step forward.

The light beneath his foot pulsed again.

The shadow stepped back slightly.

Not much… but it moved.

Raven's eyes widened a little.

He understood.

Not completely… but enough.

He continued walking slowly.

The shadow followed.

But it did not come closer.

It moved between the trees, watching, waiting.

As if something prevented it from approaching further.

The forest grew deeper.

The darkness heavier.

Yet the glowing line continued extending ahead of Raven.

And as he walked, he realized a small but important truth.

The circle had not only given him a path.

It had brought him into a world he never knew existed.

A world where things move within shadows.

Things that watch.

Things that wait.

And on that night… as the small child walked deeper into the forest while a silent shadow followed him between the trees, the first true page of his long journey began to be written.
