Raven continued walking between the trees, the faint glowing line stretching ahead of him like a thread guiding him deeper into the heart of the forest. The light was not strong, but it was steady, enough to lead him one step after another.
The ground beneath his feet was damp, and the sound of dry leaves appeared with every step he took. Yet there was another sound that did not belong to his footsteps.
The sound that had followed him minutes ago.
The shadow.
This time Raven did not look back.
But he could feel it.
Something was moving between the trees.
Something was watching.
Something was waiting.
Long moments passed as he walked slowly, while the glowing line continued to stretch before him. The deeper he went, the more the forest seemed to change. It became quieter, heavier, as if the air itself carried weight.
Then something unexpected happened.
The line vanished.
Raven stopped immediately.
He looked down.
The light that had guided him the entire way disappeared as if someone had extinguished it in a single moment.
The forest grew almost completely dark.
Raven slowly raised his head.
At that moment, he heard the sound more clearly.
A step.
Not his.
Another step.
Directly behind him.
He turned slowly.
Between the trees, the shadow appeared again.
But this time it was no longer just a vague movement.
Its shape was clearer.
A tall, thin body, its limbs slightly unnatural, moving in a way that did not resemble either human or animal.
And its eyes…
Two pale eyes faintly shining in the darkness.
The shadow stood still for a moment.
Then it moved.
One step toward Raven.
The air froze.
Raven tightened his grip around the stone in his hand.
His heart beat faster, but he did not move.
He did not run.
He did not scream.
He simply stood there.
The shadow stopped again.
As if it had not expected that.
Several long seconds passed.
Then a faint sound came.
Not from the shadow.
From the ground.
Directly beneath Raven's feet.
A tiny light began to appear.
A small point of light.
Then from it a faint line extended again.
But this time the path was not long.
Instead, it formed a very small circle beneath his feet.
The light pulsed once.
Immediately the shadow stepped back.
Raven's eyes widened slightly.
The light…
It was stopping it.
He did not know how.
But the result was clear.
The shadow did not come closer.
It stood at the edge of the light, watching him with unmoving eyes.
It did not appear afraid.
Only hesitant.
As if some unseen rule prevented it from crossing that space.
A silent moment passed.
Then something else happened.
The silence itself began to change.
The forest that had remained still now carried faint sounds.
Leaves shifting.
A distant movement.
As if something else in the forest had begun to move as well.
The shadow lifted its head slightly, as if it sensed it too.
Then it looked back at Raven.
Slowly it stepped backward.
One step…
Then another…
Until it disappeared between the trees once again.
But Raven knew it had not gone far.
Only retreated.
Raven lowered his gaze toward the small light beneath his feet.
The faint circle slowly began to fade.
As if its task had been completed.
Moments later the light vanished completely.
Darkness returned to the forest.
But this time there was a difference.
Raven no longer felt alone.
The forest was filled with things he could not see.
Things watching from the shadows.
He breathed slowly.
Then began walking again.
There was no glowing line now.
No clear path.
But inside him there was calm.
Because he had realized something simple.
The thing that had been following him… was not the strongest presence in this forest.
And that meant there were other things.
Things perhaps far more dangerous.
And somewhere between those dark trees, Raven's true journey had begun to take a different shape.
A journey not guided by clear roads…
But by shadows.
