Qin Yan retraced his steps, running across the open fields. The morning glow carpeted the ground, and the gentle warmth of the early sun felt incredibly comfortable as it bathed him.
It was unlike the midday sun, which was as passionate as a raging fire, or the evening sun, which felt like it was slowly dripping away.
This light carried the adorable charm of a newborn infant while possessing the vigorous vitality of a youth.
At times it was refreshing, at others warm, but one thing remained constant it always kindled a sense of warmth in the hearts of men.
The flowers and grass along the way stretched their limbs, shaking off their lethargy to begin a new day. Beautiful, colorful butterflies danced amidst the blossoms under the sunlight, showcasing their deep attachment to the morning rays.
With light, graceful bodies and a steady hum, little bees wove through the multicolored sea of flowers, beginning their busy lives.
In the distance, a large bird led several fledglings as they practiced flying under the blue sky. They all seemed to look forward to more caresses from the warm sun on their tender wings, hoping to gain enough strength to soar freely across the vast heavens.
Everything in the morning was so fresh and full of life, overflowing with the hope that resided in people's hearts. Nothing was more beautiful or more sacred than the first ray of dawn.
As he ran, Qin Yan suddenly heard a rustling sound coming from a thicket not far ahead. It seemed as though something was moving inside.
To avoid alerting whatever it was, Qin Yan immediately lowered his stance and crept forward on tiptoe, stealthily approaching to see what kind of fellow was hiding there.
Gently and slowly, he parted the bushes and poked his head out. He saw a plump, wild bird with shimmering golden feathers foraging for food, its large backside swaying left and right toward Qin Yan's direction.
Judging by its size, the thing must have weighed at least a hundred pounds. This looks like it could serve as a fine breakfast, Qin Yan thought, his eyes lighting up as his spirits instantly lifted.
Sensing something unusual, the large bird which was currently pecking at the ground—suddenly puffed out its chest and lifted its head to look around.
Qin Yan was startled and quickly ducked into hiding. He hadn't expected it to be so perceptive. He couldn't help but marvel at how exceptionally sharp the instincts of these wild animals were.
When it finally turned its head, Qin Yan was stunned. This was actually a wild bird with a center-parted hairstyle.
The tuft of red, center-parted feathers on its head was exceptionally vivid and charming, giving it a strangely human-like appearance. At that moment, it held a large, round ladybug a Gokibore in its beak.
After looking around and finding nothing, the large wild bird, a Cockadoodledoo, turned back, preparing to finish its meal.
In that exact moment, Qin Yan struck. He lunged out from the thicket like a pouncing tiger, leaping behind the Cockadoodledoo. His hands clamped down on its neck like a vice, hoisting it up as he took to the sky.
It all happened too fast. The Cockadoodledoo, still holding the Gokibore and preparing to swallow it, had no idea what was happening. It was in a state of utter confusion, staring blankly as the ground drifted further and further away.
Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!
Once it finally reacted, its feathers stood on end. It let out a terrified shriek, its wings flapping frantically while its large talons thrashed wildly in the air.
As its beak flew open, the Gokibore dropped out, rolling down its silky chest to its toes before being kicked away by the bird's thrashing feet.
During the flight, the Cockadoodledoo continued to struggle violently. Its once-perfect center-parting became a disheveled mess, and loose feathers drifted through the air.
Qin Yan grew impatient with the bird's incessant squawking and constant struggling. Putting a bit of strength into his hands Snap! he broke its neck in one swift motion.
Gurgle...
The Cockadoodledoo let out a miserable groan before its body went limp. Its flapping wings lost their strength, and its thick, rounded legs twitched once or twice before falling still.
It was finally dead. The sky returned to silence, and Qin Yan let out a long sigh of relief before continuing his journey.
A short while later, Qin Yan arrived over the village. He looked down to see a long line of people on the country road, traveling in a grand procession. They were moving in small groups, dragging bags and luggage.
Some pushed small carts while others drove livestock. It seemed the villagers had begun to move out in succession.
This is for the best.
After observing for a moment, Qin Yan turned away.
Descending into the courtyard, Qin Yan casually tossed the Cockadoodledoo onto the ground and prepared to push open the door to the house.
Suddenly
Creak!
The main door opened from the inside, and Mother Luo walked out holding a wooden basin, nearly bumping into Qin Yan.
"Eh? Qin Yan! Why are you here? Weren't you sleeping?" Mother Luo asked, looking quite surprised to see him at the door.
"Morning, Auntie!"
"I woke up and went for a stroll. I just got back," Qin Yan explained with a smile.
"What? You were already out?" Mother Luo exclaimed. She hadn't expected him to be up so early. Suddenly, she spotted the strange fellow lying in the yard behind him and asked, "What is that thing behind you? Did you bring that back too?"
"Yes! That's a wild bird I encountered on the road. It looked pretty good, so I brought it back."
"Encountered it on the road? Did you go very far?"
"Uh, I suppose it wasn't that far!" Qin Yan said, scratching his head. For him, it really hadn't been far only a few dozen kilometers.
"Oh! Well, you're certainly an early bird. Xuanyi and the others just got up. You must be hungry! Just wait, Auntie will feed the chickens and then get breakfast ready for you all."
Mother Luo said as she looked down at her basin. So, she had been on her way to feed the poultry. No wonder she was carrying a basin.
"You're such a polite child. No need to be so formal with me. Just treat this like your own home," Mother Luo said cheerfully. She reached out and ruffled Qin Yan's hair affectionately.
To be honest, Qin Yan wasn't quite used to the gesture, but he nodded anyway. "Mm-hmm."
"Mom, what's going on? Who are you talking to?" Luo Xuanyi's voice drifted out from inside. She walked over, rubbing her bleary eyes.
"Huh? Qin Yan, why are you here?" When she reached the door and opened her eyes to see him, she asked in surprise.
Qin Yan was about to answer, but Mother Luo beat him to it. "Qin Yan has been up for ages. He already went out for a stroll and even brought back a wild bird. Look at you sleeping until the sun burns your backside before getting up."
"Aiyoo! Mom! I already got up early, much earlier than usual."
"Qin Yan, did you really bring this back? My goodness, this is way too big!"
Luo Xuanyi gave a brief, aggrieved retort to her mother before following her gaze into the yard. There, she saw a massive wild bird lying quietly on the ground. She couldn't help but cry out in amazement.
"Look at you! Aren't you embarrassed to let others see you like this?" Mother Luo said helplessly, clearly unable to do anything about her daughter's antics.
Qin Yan simply smiled and remained silent.
"Hehe!" Luo Xuanyi grinned at her mother, showing off her pearly white teeth.
"So, what are we going to do with this?" Luo Xuanyi asked, looking at the large Cockadoodledoo in the yard.
"Oh! We're going to eat it, of course. I brought it for breakfast," Qin Yan replied.
"For breakfast?" Both mother and daughter cried out in unison. They hadn't expected such a massive bird to be used just for breakfast.
"Yeah! Is there something wrong with that?" Qin Yan asked, confused by their intense reaction.
"No! Not at all," they both said at the same time.
"Since that's the case, I'll have your uncle help you process it!" After saying that, Mother Luo shouted toward the house, "Head of the house! Come out for a second!"
Clomp, clomp, clomp! A series of footsteps approached.
"What is it, mother of my children? Oh? Xuanyi, Qin Yan, you're both here too!" Father Luo said as he arrived.
"Morning, Uncle!" Qin Yan greeted him.
"Mm, morning, child."
"It's like this! That's a wild bird Qin Yan brought back this morning for breakfast. Can you help process it?" Mother Luo pointed toward the bird in the yard.
"Oh! Alright." Father Luo looked in the direction she was pointing and was equally surprised to see the Cockadoodledoo. He then nodded in agreement.
