The late afternoon sun cast long, golden streaks across Haneul Middle School. Most students had already left, but a few lingered, chatting or packing up their art supplies from the contest earlier. Daewon wandered the quiet halls, his sketchbook tucked under his arm. He wasn't in a hurry; something tugged at his curiosity today - the faint rumor of a forgotten rooftop garden hidden somewhere above the school.
He stopped at the narrow stairwell leading to the old science wing, its door slightly ajar. It creaked softly as he pushed it open, the musty scent of old paper and soil drifting out. Step by step, he ascended, heart thrumming with anticipation.
At the top, he found it - a small, overgrown garden, tucked behind a rusted iron gate. Ivy crawled up the walls, and tiny flowers peeked through cracks in the stone floor. Sunlight spilled through broken panes of glass above, turning the dust motes into golden specks floating in the air.
"Whoa…" Daewon whispered, awe-struck. He stepped inside, brushing leaves from the path, feeling as if he'd stumbled into a secret world.
Just then, a soft giggle echoed. Daewon froze, eyes scanning the garden. "Who's there?"
From behind a patch of flowering bushes, Aera emerged, holding a small sketchbook. Her eyes widened in surprise at seeing him. "Daewon? I… I was just…"
"You knew about this place?" he asked, a teasing edge in his voice.
She shook her head, cheeks tinged pink. "No! I was… I found a way up while looking for a quiet spot to draw."
He smiled faintly. "Guess we're both explorers, huh?"
For a few moments, they simply looked around, taking in the forgotten beauty of the garden. Aera set her sketchbook down on a stone bench and knelt, examining a cluster of delicate blue flowers. "It's… magical," she murmured.
Daewon crouched beside her, brushing a fallen leaf from the bench. "It's like it's been waiting for someone to notice it again."
The soft golden light, the quiet rustle of leaves, the scent of wildflowers - everything seemed to conspire to make the moment perfect. Their hands brushed accidentally as they reached for the same small stone to prop open a cracked gate. Both froze, a tiny spark flaring where their fingers touched.
Aera looked down, fingers fidgeting with the corner of her sketchbook. "Sorry…"
"Don't… don't apologize," Daewon said, voice low. He felt a heat in his chest, a flutter that made him keenly aware of her presence.
As they explored, they discovered a small, overgrown pond at the garden's center. The water was murky but reflective, catching the late sun in rippling patterns. Daewon leaned closer, carefully balancing on the stone edge.
"You're… careful," Aera said softly, watching him.
He grinned. "Wouldn't want to fall in front of you."
Her lips curved into a small, shy smile, eyes glimmering. "Good point."
They found an old bench, partially hidden by vines, and Daewon suggested they draw the garden together. "Let's make it ours, even if just for today," he said.
Aera hesitated, then nodded. They spread out their sketchbooks and began drawing side by side. The quiet was comfortable, filled with the occasional soft scratch of pencil or brush against paper.
Halfway through, a tiny mishap occurred: Daewon accidentally knocked over a small pot of wildflowers while reaching for a palette. The flowers tumbled across the stone path, and both of them bent to pick them up. Their knees brushed, shoulders touched, and for a heartbeat, the world seemed to shrink around them.
Aera laughed softly. "We make a clumsy pair, don't we?"
Daewon chuckled, brushing a strand of hair from his eyes. "Maybe… but it's fun."
Suddenly, a rustling from the far side of the garden startled them. A small, scrappy cat emerged from the bushes, its green eyes gleaming. It padded cautiously toward them, sniffing at their shoes. Aera giggled. "It's like the garden has its own guardian."
Daewon crouched, holding out a hand. The cat sniffed, then purred, rubbing against his leg. "Seems friendly enough," he said.
Aera watched the interaction, her smile softening. "You… have a way with animals."
He shrugged, cheeks warming. "I guess… maybe I just notice them more."
As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, they packed up their sketches. Daewon tucked the sketchbook under his arm, then glanced at Aera. "Thanks… for sharing this with me."
She met his gaze, eyes shining with quiet warmth. "Thank you… for finding it first."
They left the garden together, stepping lightly down the stairwell, careful not to disturb the quiet magic they'd found. Outside, the school grounds were bathed in the soft glow of evening.
Walking side by side, their hands brushed occasionally, fingers close but never quite entwined. Each touch sent tiny flutters through their hearts, a subtle rhythm building between them.
"Maybe we can come back," Daewon suggested.
Aera tilted her head, a teasing glint in her eyes. "Maybe… if no one else finds it first."
Their laughter echoed softly, mingling with the rustle of the wind through the trees. A hidden garden, a shared secret, and the quiet thrill of something new - the day had given them a story all their own, soft and heart-skipping, waiting for the next chapter to bloom.
