"Tell me you didn't drag me out here just to circle trees," Zade called over the wind, his voice carrying easily as he angled slightly ahead of me. "If this ends with nothing but empty sky, I'm turning back."
"You complain like you were forced," I answered. "You could have stayed in the city with your beloved mortals."
"And miss the rare chance to watch you do something other than stand behind a throne?" he said, amused. "I wouldn't be that cruel to myself."
A quiet sound came from behind us, not quite a laugh, not quite a sigh.
"If you both spent less time talking," Zephyrus said, "you might actually notice something worth chasing."
"I already have," I replied, my gaze lowering toward the canopy.
For a moment it looked like nothing, just a ripple in the space between branches, but then it moved again without crossing the distance between, appearing somewhere else entirely in the span of a breath.
