"You cannot honestly mean to tell me that this is what mortals call bread."
Zephyr looked personally offended as he stood in the middle of Zade's kitchen, holding a slice between two fingers.
I sat at the table with Atticus resting against my chest and immediately laughed harder than I probably should have, mostly because Zephyr's expression was so deeply serious for someone complaining about toast.
"It's bread," I said. "You're being dramatic."
"I'm not being dramatic, Dove. I'm being correct. This is too soft."
Lucian, who was leaning against the counter with far too much amusement on his face, took a bite from his own piece and shrugged.
"It tastes fine."
Zephyr looked at him like betrayal had just occurred in real time.
"No, it doesn't. It tastes wrong."
Zade reached over Zephyr's shoulder, stole the bread straight out of his hand, and took a bite himself.
"It's bread," he said flatly.
"Your standards are abysmal."
"Your suffering is embarrassing."
