Chapter 42 - The Wildstyle Gateway

The rescue team slipped out of the Museum's back entrance. Above them, the Red Grid pulsed like a heartbeat, scanning the streets for any unauthorized Resonance. Every time a Sentry drone passed overhead, the team froze, pressing themselves into the shadows of the flickering buildings.

"Stay close to the walls," Jax whispered.

He lunged forward, spraying a jagged, neon-pink streak of energy across the brickwork of a 1920s tenement building that had manifested in the middle of a modern parking lot.

As the "paint" hit the wall, the brick didn't just change color—it dissolved into a doorway. This was a "Glitched Alley," a temporary tunnel through the layers of the city that didn't exist on the Overseers' maps.

"It's a shortcut," Jax explained. "We're moving through the 'Empty Space' between the files. To the Red Grid, we're just a smudge on the lens."

The Ambush at Herald Square

They emerged near Herald Square, just as a convoy of white porcelain Sentries marched past. In the center of the formation was a floating, transparent Data-Cage. Inside, a dozen children were huddled together. They weren't crying; the cage was "Muting" them, turning their fear into a flat, grey hum that the Empire State Building could easily harvest.

"The cage is locked with a Parity Bit," Caius whispered from Adriana's shoulder. "If you try to break it with force, it will simply 'reformat' the children inside to prevent data corruption. You have to unlock it from the inside out."

"I can't get close enough without being scanned," Adriana said, her Green Key pulsing with nervous energy.

"I'll give you the cover," Jax said. He began to spray the air itself, creating a cloud of "Static Graffiti" that looked like a kaleidoscope of shattered glass. "Go now! The cloud will only confuse their sensors for sixty seconds!"
