Chapter 18 - Kurai Hinotori

KURAI THE PRODIGY

The academy buzzed with the quiet intensity of exam day. Inochi and Tosuke had been immersed in grueling preparation exercises for the semi-finals, each focusing on their strengths and honing every skill. Yet, among the academy's brightest, one student quietly rose above all expectations.

Kurai, seated at her desk with composed focus, breezed through the written examination.

Each answer came with remarkable precision, her intellect shining far beyond what anyone expected of a beginner.

By the end of the exam, she had scored twice as high as Tosuke and Inochi, leaving her peers awestruck.

RECOGNITION OF TALENT

Yuro, one of the senior exam evaluators, leaned back in his chair, studying Kurai's completed exam. "Remarkable," he murmured, a hint of admiration in his voice.

He rose and addressed the other instructors, his tone carrying authority. "Kurai's performance surpasses beginner-level expectations.

Her analytical skills, comprehension, and tactical insight are exceptional. She must be advanced to the intermediary level immediately."

The instructors exchanged looks of agreement. Kurai's abilities were indeed unusual for her rank.

They had no choice but to elevate her to the Intermediate Class, enabling her to take part in the semi-finals alongside Inochi and Tosuke.

Kurai left the academy, her heart pounding with excitement, only to be met by Hikari outside. A warm smile crossed Hikari's face as they approached each other.

A PROMOTION CELEBRATED

"I passed! I'm now Mid-Class!" Kurai exclaimed, her eyes bright. "That means I can compete in the semi-exams with Inochi and Tosuke!"

Hikari beamed with pride. "That's incredible, Kurai! You've earned it. Your parents would be so proud of you right now."

With the exams looming, Kurai's thoughts immediately turned to training. "Hikari… can you help me? I need to prepare."

Hikari hesitated, mentioning a pending mission that required her attention.

Kurai's shoulders slumped slightly, recalling the rigorous training sessions they had back home. Hikari's voice softened, sensing her sister's disappointment. "Kurai, this is home now. I'll find time for your training. You won't be left behind."

Kurai's eyes lit up, renewed with determination. She nodded eagerly. "Thank you, big sister!" Together, they headed into the sakura forest, ready to begin her specialized training.

TRAINING BEGINS

Hikari and Kurai found a secluded spot amidst the cherry blossoms.

The soft rustling of leaves blended with the distant sound of birds, a peaceful contrast to the intensity that was about to unfold.

Hikari instructed Kurai in close combat techniques, correcting her stance, guiding her strikes, and helping her refine precision and timing.

"You're talented, Kurai," Hikari said, observing a swift, flawless block. "But there's something more I want to show you. A secret power… something very few in our clan awaken."

Kurai's eyes widened with anticipation. "What is it, big sister?"

Hikari's smile faded slightly. She closed her eyes, taking a steadying breath. When she reopened them, her eyes gleamed with a golden intensity. Slowly, deliberately, she revealed her Ultra Kokkorogan to Kurai.

Kurai gasped. "Woah… big sis… your eyes… they're just like Father's!"

Hikari returned a small, reassuring smile. "And someday, yours will be too. This is a unique ability, enhancing perception and power in both eyes."

THE ORIGIN OF HIKARI'S POWER

Kurai listened intently as Hikari recounted the origin of her Kokkorogan. "It awakened during that ine day," Hikari explained, her voice steady but tinged with emotion. "The shinobi from Kurayami who tried to capture you. I was filled with panic… my heart racing, my vision blurring. I felt powerless. But then, the Ultra Kokkorogan surged within me."

Kurai's eyes widened as her sister continued.

"The stress, the desperation to protect you it triggered it. But it wasn't easy. My eyes endured pain from burst vessels, my skull and brain were overloaded with information…

my retinas even tore slightly. I had to train, adapt, and strengthen my mind and body to control it."

BASICS OF THE KOKKOROGAN

Hikari explained further. "There are two types: the Basic Kokkorogan and the Ultra Kokkorogan.

The Basic grants the ability to see the world in slow motion, recall events like a photographic memory, and instill fear in opponents by eye contact.

I awakened the basic during a mission when Akimi, my best friend, sacrificed herself to save me.

The Ultra… it's far more powerful, but it comes with extreme risks."

Kurai shivered. "Risks?"

Hikari's gaze was serious. "The Ultra Kokkorogan is life-altering.

When awakened, it can drive some to madness, blindness, or even death.

Only a few have survived it.

I endured because the thought of leaving you behind gave me strength.

Even our parents don't know I possess it."

Kurai felt a pang of unease, but Hikari smiled gently. "Don't worry, little sister. I believe you will awaken it one day too. And when you do, you'll withstand the trial."

Kurai's eyes flickered with determination. "You're right… I will achieve it, big sister."

Hikari then shared that the Ultra Kokkorogan granted two unique special abilities at its highest level, bestowing immense power.

Kurai's mouth dropped open in astonishment. "Wow… what are your abilities?" she asked eagerly.

Hikari shook her head with a playful smile. "Not yet. One step at a time."

Kurai grinned mischievously.

"Gatekeeping again… you're so boring."

Hikari laughed softly.

"Alright, let's get back to training."

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Kurai tightened her grip on her kunai, eyes blazing with determination.

"Big sister, challenge me using your Kokkorogan! Let me test myself!"

Hikari raised an eyebrow. "You're moving too fast."

Kurai tilted her head, teasing. "Are you scared of your younger sister? Just admit it… or are you afraid you'll lose?"

Hikari laughed, amused by Kurai's boldness. "Fine… just this time. But only the Basic Kokkorogan. No extreme measures."

Kurai's grin widened. "Don't treat me like a child. I'm Mid-Class now!"

Hikari smiled warmly. "Just this once, Kurai. Prepare yourself."

HIKARI VS KURAI

Kurai lunged forward, kunai poised, but Hikari remained motionless.

Confused, Kurai called out, "Big sister… why aren't you moving? The duel hasn't even started!"

Hikari's eyes remained focused, calm. "It has, Kurai. You just haven't realized it."

Kurai, undeterred, charged with full force, attempting to strike Hikari in the stomach. Yet, her movements slowed unnaturally.

The world seemed distorted time stretched and her strikes lagged behind.

A chill ran down Kurai's spine as she looked into Hikari's eyes.

Fear surged through her, her body trembling, sweat beading on her forehead.

She dropped her kunai and staggered backward, retreating with all her might.

THE AFTERMATH

Hikari deactivated her Kokkorogan and laughed softly.

"Relax, little sister.

That was just an introduction to the Basic Kokkorogan.

Remember what I said: the battle was over before it even began, because you weren't prepared to face it."

Kurai, still trembling, exhaled shakily. "That… that wasn't funny! You scared me half to death, big sister."

Hikari's expression softened.

She extended her arms in a comforting embrace.

"I promise I won't scare you like that again.

But you need to learn mental control to resist Genkaku, and other mind-altering techniques."

Kurai stared up at her, awe-struck. "You're incredible… you're amazing, big sister."

Hikari smiled and reminded her gently, "And don't forget, im already a High-Class Shinobi in training. Now, let's proceed with your education."

The sisters returned to training, side by side beneath the blooming sakura trees. Kurai's heart raced with excitement, her determination blazing brighter than ever.

With Hikari's guidance and the promise of her own awakening, she knew she would grow strongernot just in skill, but in spirit.

And as the wind rustled through the cherry blossoms, Kurai felt a deep, unshakable connection to her sister, to the ninja arts, and to the path she was destined to walk.
