Chapter 31 - The Memory That Shouldn’t Exist

The ground stopped shaking.

But the silence that followed felt worse.

For several seconds, none of us moved. Dust still floated in the air above the Resonance Chamber, drifting slowly like gray snow under the dim lights embedded in the ceiling.

I was still staring at the stone platform.

Seven pedestals.

Four glowing.

Three dark.

And the memory I had just seen refused to disappear.

The burning sky.

The collapsing city.

The seven rings hovering above the platform.

And me—

Standing in the center of it.

Watching the world end.

My bronze ring pulsed violently again.

Not warm anymore.

Hot.

Like it was trying to force something back into my mind.

"Ji-hoon?"

Seo-yeon's voice pulled me back.

I hadn't noticed when she moved closer, but now she was standing right beside me, close enough that her shoulder brushed lightly against my arm.

Her gold ring shimmered faintly.

"You look pale," she said quietly.

"I'm fine," I muttered automatically.

"You're not."

Her voice softened.

"You were shaking."

I hadn't even realized it.

Behind us, Tae-jun cleared his throat loudly.

"Okay."

He raised one hand.

"Just checking—did everyone else see the apocalypse flashback or was that only our main character here?"

Hae-in crossed her arms.

"I definitely didn't."

Ara remained silent, her crimson ring glowing slowly as she studied the chamber.

The silver-haired Warden watched us all with quiet interest.

But his eyes kept returning to me.

Like he was waiting.

Waiting for something.

Seo-yeon noticed it too.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Stop looking at him like that."

The Warden tilted his head.

"Like what?"

"Like you already know what he's going to do."

The man chuckled softly.

"I do."

Seo-yeon stepped half a step forward.

Not aggressively.

But protectively.

"You've been talking like this whole situation is some kind of story you've already read."

The Warden's silver eyes flickered.

"That's because it is."

Tae-jun groaned.

"…I hate this guy."

But Seo-yeon didn't look away.

"Then tell us something useful."

The Warden smiled faintly.

"Ask the right question."

Seo-yeon's gaze sharpened.

"Fine."

She pointed at the pedestals.

"What happens when all seven rings are here?"

The Warden's expression didn't change.

But for a brief moment, the chamber lights flickered again.

And the air felt colder.

"That," he said quietly, "is the question every cycle eventually asks."

Tae-jun whispered,

"Yeah, that didn't help."

But I wasn't listening anymore.

Because the bronze ring suddenly pulsed again.

Stronger.

A strange pressure built behind my eyes.

Another flash—

Another fragment of memory—

But this time it was different.

Not destruction.

A room.

A quiet room filled with sunlight.

Bookshelves along the walls.

Two people standing near a desk.

One of them—

My grandfather.

Professor Kang Min-seok.

I recognized him instantly from the old photographs in my parents' house.

But the other person—

A woman.

Young.

Holding a notebook.

Her voice echoed faintly in the memory.

"If the resonance theory is correct… the rings will eventually find each other again."

My grandfather nodded.

"But the center guardian must never remember everything."

The woman frowned.

"Why?"

His answer came slowly.

"Because if he remembers the ending… he might try to change it."

The memory shattered.

I staggered slightly again.

Seo-yeon immediately grabbed my arm.

"Ji-hoon!"

"I'm okay," I said quickly.

But my heart was racing.

Because I recognized the woman in the memory now.

It was Seo-yeon's grandmother.

Dr. Han Seo-jin.

Seo-yeon noticed my expression.

"What did you see?"

I hesitated.

Then quietly said,

"Our grandparents knew each other."

She blinked.

"…What?"

I looked at the journal she was still holding.

"They were researching the rings together."

Her eyes widened slightly.

But before she could respond—

A sharp metallic sound echoed through the chamber.

Everyone turned toward the platform.

The four glowing pedestals suddenly flared brighter.

Bronze.

Emerald.

Gold.

Crimson.

Ara stepped forward quickly.

"The resonance is increasing."

Director Kang frowned.

"That shouldn't be happening yet."

Tae-jun pointed nervously at the platform.

"Guys… the pedestals are moving."

He was right.

The stone platform had begun rotating slowly.

Seven carved channels along the floor started glowing faintly.

Lines of light spreading outward from the pedestals.

Like a giant circuit waking up.

The Warden sighed softly.

"Well."

He folded his arms.

"That escalated faster than expected."

Seo-yeon turned toward him sharply.

"What's happening?"

"The chamber is reacting to the guardians."

Ara looked at the glowing channels carefully.

"…No."

Her voice lowered.

"It's reacting to something else."

The Warden's smile faded slightly.

"Oh?"

Ara pointed toward the three dark pedestals.

"They're not inactive."

Everyone looked again.

And that's when we noticed it.

The three remaining pedestals weren't glowing.

But faint cracks of light had begun forming across their surfaces.

Tae-jun whispered,

"…That seems bad."

Director Kang nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Because if those pedestals were activating…

Then the remaining rings were closer than we thought.

The chamber lights flickered again.

And suddenly—

A loud impact echoed somewhere above us.

Like something heavy had just hit the surface of the ground far above the Archive.

Hae-in looked up nervously.

"…Did anyone else hear that?"

Another impact followed.

Closer this time.

The Warden's expression had changed now.

Not fear.

But curiosity.

"How interesting."

Seo-yeon frowned.

"What is it?"

He looked toward the chamber entrance.

"It seems the other players have arrived."

Tae-jun blinked.

"…Other players?"

The Warden nodded calmly.

"Yes."

His silver eyes drifted back toward the platform.

"And judging by the chamber's reaction…"

He paused.

"…they're already inside the Archive."

The silence that followed felt heavier than before.

Seo-yeon instinctively moved slightly closer to me.

Her shoulder brushed against mine again.

Not by accident.

Her voice was quiet.

"Ji-hoon…"

"What?"

She looked toward the chamber entrance.

"…I have a bad feeling."

I didn't answer.

Because the bronze ring had started pulsing again.

But this time—

It wasn't reacting to the chamber.

Or the pedestals.

It was reacting to something approaching from the corridor we had just entered.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Echoing through the Archive halls.

The sound grew closer.

Tae-jun whispered nervously,

"…Please tell me that's just another mysterious guardian."

No one answered.

Because the footsteps stopped right outside the chamber.

And a new voice echoed across the stone floor.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

"…So this is where the Bronze Guardian has been hiding."

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

A shadow stretched across the doorway.

But the figure standing there remained hidden in darkness.

The Warden's eyes gleamed faintly.

"…Ah."

His voice carried quiet amusement.

"Now things are finally becoming interesting."

Seo-yeon tightened her grip on the journal.

Her gold ring flickered beside my bronze one.

And for some reason—

The moment the unknown figure stepped closer to the doorway—

My ring pulsed harder than it ever had before.

Not in recognition.

Not in memory.

But in warning.

Something was very wrong.

And whatever had just arrived in the Archive…

It wasn't here to protect the rings.

It was here to take them.
