Chapter 38 - Chapter-38:The Journey Between Us

The buses lined up outside the school early morning, engines humming, teachers shouting names, students laughing louder than usual.

Trips always did that --made people careless.

Christopher arrived with Evan and Leo, backpack slung lazily over the shoulder, looking relaxed like always. But Leo noticed the way his eyes searched the crowd without meaning to.

Zia stood near the second bus,Grey hair tied loosely, sunlight catching strands that made her impossible to miss.

Their eyes met .

Just for a second.

Then both looked away.

Jason watched that second very carefully.

"Back row!" Evan grinned, dragging Leo along .

Christopher hesitated only a moment before following them.As expected, the back seats were ignored.

A minute later,Zia boarded --teachers guiding girls to the front rows.

Sofee slipped in right behind her.

Too close.

Jason took a seat Across the aisle from Zia ,Casual on the surface, alert underneath.

The bus moved.

Music played. Laughter rose.windows rattled.

But under all that noise, small things happened.

Zia passed a folded note back during a speed breaker ,hidden inside a book Evan had dropped "accidentally. "

Still us.

Christopher read it ,jaw tightening--not from fear, but from something steadier.

Always, he wrote back ,tearing the edge carefully.

Leo saw the exchange .

He didn't say anything.

He just leaned back, staring out the window, letting the truth settle quietly inside him.

Halfway through the journey, the bus stopped at a roadside Cafe.

Teachers announced a break.

Chaos followed.

Sofee deliberately walked slower ,letting Zia drift ahead .

"You seem....lighter," Sofee said suddenly.

Zia glanced at her."Trips do that ."

Sofee smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes ."So do secrets. "

Zia stopped walking.

She turned calmly. "Not every silence is a secret, Sofee .Some are boundaries. "

That hurt more than anger would have.

Near the snack counter, Jason stood beside Christopher.

"Funny coincidence, "he said,"Same bus .same trip."

Christopher met his gaze,unfazed. " It's a school trip.Not destiny."

Jason chuckled. "Let's hope."

But when Jason walked away, his phone was already out--texting his father.

That evening, they reached the hotel.

Rooms keys were distributed. Rules were repeated.

Boys on one floor. Girls on another.

Safe.

Or so the teachers thought.

Layer that night, when the corridor quieted and lights dimmed, a small folded note slid under Christopher's door.

Store room rules Don't apply here .stairwell.five minutes.

Christopher smiled .

Carefully. Quietly. He stepped out.

In the stairswell ,Zia waited--breathing fast ,eyes bright.

They didn't speak.

She reached for him first .

He kissed her back without thinking.

For a moment, the world narrowed to just that space between floors---where no one watched, no one knew.

Footsteps echoed nearby.

They broke apart instantly, hearts racing.

A shadow passed .

Moved on.

Close .

Back in their rooms,Sofee sat awake, staring at the ceiling.

Jason stood by the window, phone glowing in his hand.

Leo lay on his bed, eyes closed accepting a truth he could never change.

And Christopher---lying awake in the dark--realized something terrifying and beautiful.

He was no longer afraid of love.

He was afraid of losing it.
