"And what makes you think I'm not a High Alpha just as you are?" The words left my lips before I could stop them, cutting through his assumptions like a blade. I tilted my head as much as his grip on my chin would allow, meeting his intense gaze head-on. "You witnessed what I accomplished today. You cannot possibly deny that my power matches yours, perhaps even exceeds it."
The growl that rumbled from deep in Xander's chest sent vibrations through the air between us. His fingers released my chin abruptly, and he turned away, stalking across the room toward his bed with predatory grace. When he sat down heavily, his broad shoulders hunched forward as he buried his face in his hands. His fingers tangled in the tawny strands of his hair, pulling at them in obvious frustration.
