Chapter 56 - Running on a Fractured Bond

Even though I forced myself to stay calm and think rationally, my heart refused to believe everything would be fine. My wolf was restless, pacing wildly inside my chest, its claws scraping against my ribs with every passing second. I sat in the passenger seat of Elliot's car as we sped toward the company, the city lights outside blurring into long streaks of silver and blue, humming with supernatural energy beneath the asphalt.

My eyes burned, tears gathering no matter how hard I tried to suppress them. I clutched May's phone tightly in my hand, my fingers stiff and cold, as if sheer will alone could make it ring. I needed my father to call. I needed to hear Jared's name followed by the word safe.

He had to be safe.

"Your son looks very smart," Elliot said quietly, his voice steady and grounding, carrying the calm authority of a strong Alpha. "He'll be fine."
