Without looking back at his face, I walked into my bedroom and shut the door quietly behind me. Nobody in this world goes out of their way for someone else without a reason. There is always something underneath. I knew exactly why Marcus had been so good to me, and I had known for a while.
Part of me had wanted to keep pretending otherwise, just to have a reason to stay. But I could not wear that kind of blindness forever, and the person I was now could not afford to anyway.
"Scarlett." He paused, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped. "Have you ever felt anything for me? Even a little?"
The question stopped me completely. My mind went quiet and stayed that way.
"I'm sorry, Marcus."
A low, short laugh came from behind the door. "Okay. I understand."
