Chapter 19 Part 2 Parents' Backstory
That night, Qi tossed restlessly, unable to sleep. Suddenly he was deeply curious about how his parents had really gotten together. He realized guessing would be pointless while Aunt surely knew the full story. He resolved to ask her directly the next day. At peace with that plan, he finally fell asleep.
In the morning, he woke to find Mother already busy in his room, cleaning and organizing. Everything seemed unchanged, yet the sight of her at work had a new allure he'd never noticed before.
Seeing him awake, she spoke as usual: "I've reheated your porridge make that your breakfast and hurry up. Are you still running this morning?"
Qi stared a bit, lost in thought, then answered: "Oh, yeah." Noting his absent response, she frowned.
Her sidelong glance was full of charm, leaving Qi stunned. He managed to scramble up, muttering, "Running, running…" and dashed out, while Mother blinked in confusion at his odd behavior.
Qi hurried through his wash-up, wolfed down breakfast, donned his workout clothes, and took off.
After he left, clutching his chest with relief, he thought: "Good… If I'd stayed any longer, I might have turned into a beast and just slept with Mom!" Then realized: "But I never found her attractive before what's up with me today?"
He ran as usual, entering the park and spotting a familiar figure a surge of joy came as he pursued her.
"Hi… Beigong…" Qi was in high spirits since Mother had opened up to him. He greeted Beigong Lingyu, for once taking the initiative. Just two days before, he'd still run away at the sight of her; now, with their bad blood past, he made an effort.
But she just acknowledged him with a curt "Mm," then as if seeing a monster sped off, vanishing quickly.
Qi shrugged; he didn't mind. After all, classmates are classmates her attitude wasn't his to fuss about.
On the road, he remembered to call Aunt.
"How's your mom?" Aunt asked immediately.
"No problem. She was up early, cleaning as usual…"
"And you're wandering around instead of helping?"
"I have something to ask you."
"What now?"
"How did Dad and Mom meet?"
"Why not ask them yourself?"
"Mom doesn't want to talk…"
Aunt hesitated, then asked, "What's got you so interested all of a sudden? Something happen?"
"Yeah, something… but hard to explain on the phone."
"Alright. I'll pick you up for lunch. Your mom won't mind?"
"No, I'll tell her."
"Good. I'll come over soon."
Lunch out with Aunt was unproblematic for Mom. Still, as Qi left, Mom seemed slightly forlorn, like something precious had been taken from her. Maybe just his imagination. His "sixth sense" had been unreliable recently.
Aunt's outfit was a surprise bare midriff and a skirt so short you could almost see the thigh roots, plus oversized sunglasses that covered half her face.
"Those huge shades! Aunt, you robbing a bank? A stocking'd mask would work better…" He joked.
"Don't mention it it's your fault. That bunch of guys doing gay stuff in the karaoke, and you're sure your mom's inside, so I called the police! Now people at work are kidding me about peeping into strangers' rooms. I'm mortified." She glared, realized he couldn't see her eyes through the sunglasses, and frowned more. She reached out suddenly and twisted his crotch he let out a howl.
Seeing his pained expression, Aunt laughed and started the car.
On the road, after Qi had stopped wincing, Aunt asked what he wanted to eat. Qi blurted out first:
"Mom wasn't in that room, but she was in the karaoke same floor as us."
"What?" Aunt was surprised.
Qi finally recounted the previous night for obvious reasons, he omitted the detail of sleeping with a stranger. He also told her about his talk with Mom.
Aunt listened in silence, only realizing as Qi finished that they were already at the coastal scenic road. She parked, rolled down the window, and gazed at the noon seascape.
"So it's just one-night stands… Your Mom's story seems fine then. Actually, I've done that too!" Aunt saw Qi's eyes widen and quickly leaned in for a kiss. "Don't be mad! That was before I had my precious Qi!"
Seeing Aunt so sweetly angle for affection, Qi pouted to hide his discomfort at picturing her with other men.
She laughed. "You really are still a little man. A real man has to be generous." Qi bristled, lunged, and shoved his hands under her crop-top, grabbing her breasts.
Aunt caught his hands. "Alright, alright Aunt was wrong! Now Aunt only has Qi, no one else. Besides, it's daytime, cars everywhere… you brat."
Only when Aunt relented did Qi let go and ask, "Mom said Dad loved another woman. Do you know who?"
While fixing her top, Aunt answered without a thought: "Who else? Sister Shuyuan… Oh, I'm used to calling her that she's your second aunt."
"What?" Qi gasped, recalling an awkward scene at Father's office.
Aunt straightened her top, lit a cigarette, and, tossing a smoke ring, began to recall.
