After the incident, Charles rode straight for Amara, switching horses along the way and sleeping no more than four to six hours a night.
He arrived at the Imperial Palace unannounced. A servant was sent ahead to notify the Emperor, and Charles was kept waiting, just long enough to make clear that even a prince did not simply walk in. When he was finally shown through, the Emperor rose from behind his desk and studied him for a long moment.
"You look terrible, Charles. Sit down and rest before we speak."
"I'd rather not, Your Majesty. I won't be staying long."
"Then at least sit."
Charles sat.
Across the hall, Shirin had been informed of his arrival the moment he crossed the gates. She stood at the window and watched the courtyard below as he made his way into the palace.
The Emperor dismissed his attendants before they began to discuss why Charles was here.
