"Are you sure this is him?" A man standing in the shadows asked gruffly, his eyes slightly visibly in the darkness because they glowed a little. He gave off a vibe of someone powerful and mysterious.
The woman standing a few feet away from him nodded, pushing the picture out for the man to accept it. She was uncomfortable standing out here, feeling creeped out.
"Look at his eyes, it's been mismatched since birth but it's nothing special. Why are you curious about him?"
The man let out a low hum as he accepted the picture and took one more glance at the image. The boy in the picture had flowing white hair and his eyes were truly mismatched. It's still a huge shock to the man that the rumors ended up being true, that someone with these features has been residing in this particular kingdom this whole time while they've been turning the whole world upside down in search of him.
There's no confirmation if this boy is actually what this man's boss is looking for, but this is a very great find. The most progress they've made in years since they began this search.
The man pocketed the picture as he faced the woman again. "That's no concern of yours. Now, run back to your master and tell him I'm pleased with my findings tonight."
He turned to leave but the woman stopped him, gripping his wrist.
"Wait— I have to know what you're planning cause this is my son in question. Are you planning something with him?" The woman's voice wobbled a little. She tried putting on a neutral look, but it was very clear that she was worried.
A snort left the man's mouth before he faced the woman again, and he offered her a bright smile.
"Be rest assured, nothing's gonna happen to him. Okay?"
The woman's face was scrunched up a little, but she tentatively nodded, looking relieved. "Okay."
As the man walked off, another laugh left his mouth. If that woman was even a little smart, she definitely shouldn't have believed him just now.
Because he just lied to her.

Varney's pov
"You failed the test." Those words kept echoing through my mind over and over again while I stood in front of the few seniors from last night, alongside a few humans I recognized from last night.
We all failed the test. Only about three passed, while about four humans were standing beside me right now. What about the rest of the humans that partook in the game? I wanted to instantly ask but I wasn't sure if I wouldn't get slapped for asking that right now.
And of course, Landon is a part of the winners. It's honestly no surprise that Landon passed the test. I mean, is there anything he's not good at?
My insides twisted with jealousy.
I focused on the seniors again while my mind traveled back to last night. I could vividly remember all that happened, and that vampire that bit me—
My hand quickly flew up to my throat to feel the bite and a gasp left my throat on realizing that I couldn't feel an open wound there. Which was crazy cause I remembered how much it hurt when the vampire bit into me. I remember all the words he revealed to me, about the whole point of the game and how I'd not survive the night, and right now, I'm still not sure of how I even survived.
"You'll all be assigned to slave duties for losing." One of the seniors finally addressed us and I stiffened, my eyes widening in utter shock.
Slave?
"Which means it's your duty to scrub this whole dorm and keep it clean at all times. Of course, you have no choice but to follow the rules. And now, get to work quickly if you want to make it in time for your first class." The senior continued and despite the shock still filling my chest, I turned away fast along with the rest of the humans.
"Not you, white hair. Wait behind." The senior called out and I stiffened, my heartbeat accelerating.
What do they want now?
I reluctantly turned back around. "Um, yes?"
"Come over here, the leader has requested for you." The senior instructed and I stiffened even more. The senior from last night who slapped me. Frankly, that guy scared me shitless and I'd rather not be taken to him right now.
But it's not like I have a choice anyway, cause the senior grabbed my arm and dragged me along with him when I stood frozen in place.
The room where he led me to was wild and spacious, and nothing like my cramped dorm. My eyes instantly widened when it fell on the leader, because he was stark naked.
That wasn't the most shocking part.
Someone was fucking him.
My mouth fell open in shock and my face grew hot before I looked away fast, my heart pounding hard. The sight was burned into my head, of the leader sitting atop a guy who was tied and blindfolded, but the guy was fucking up into him from beneath him.
"Ah, don't be shy, you can look." The leader called out with a lazy giggly, sounding nothing like the vicious leader who slapped me last night for asking a question.
"Uh— I'd rather not." I breathed out awkwardly, wishing I could get out of here right now.
"Why? You straight, kid?" The leader drawled as I heard him move and I shifted around awkwardly again, my eyes burning a hole into the wall in front of me.
"Um, yeah," I muttered.
A laugh filled the room, then the senior was coming to stand in front of me, thankfully now in a loose pair of pants.
"That's hilarious, human. You really believe you're straight?"
I squared my jaw. What was that supposed to mean? I'm straight and a hundred percent sure.
He waved me off before I could speak, shooting a sharp look at the senior that brought me here. "Leave us, and take that one away. He's useless and barely made me come twice." He nodded at the guy still strapped at the bed, and on noticing the scandalized expression on my face, he laughed softly before asking me to come into another room with him.
It wasn't like I have a choice right now, so I did just that, while wondering why I was really summoned here. His grin fell off once as were alone and I gulped as he stood in front of me.
"How did you survive?" He asked bluntly and my eyes widened, my mouth hanging open.
"I- I don't… what?" I stuttered, shocked cause basically, he just proved to me that what that vampire said last night was true and that I also wasn't supposed to survive.
"And don't dare lie to me, human. Anyone who lies to me always end up regretting it. How did you survive and how did you manage to take down the vampire?"
My mind reeled in confusion. The vampire was taken down? By who? This literally makes zero sense right now.
"I didn't do anything. I swear, I don't know how I survived." I breathed out fast and he shot me a sharp, inquisitive look, as of trying dig out something.
He grabbed my hair and suddenly wrenched my head sideways, making a sharp pain shoot into my scalp.
"The bite is all healed up. This is weird." He spoke, before letting go of me and shooting me a confused look.
"What are you?"
