All the black cars drove out of the woods, and the commotion they stirred up suddenly fell silent.
Faye Vaughn stood alone in the woods, her only company the wrecked, bombed-out van not far away.
"Continue heading east."
The command came from a loudspeaker in the treetops.
"Okay."
Faye Vaughn tightened her grip on her backpack straps and headed east.
After walking for about ten minutes, she spotted a dilapidated van parked in the distance.
It wasn't the one that had been blown up, just very similar.
Faye Vaughn quickened her pace and ran over. "Liam Linden!"
Sure enough, the van's driver-side door opened, and a tall, slender young man jumped out.
As Faye Vaughn walked toward him, he suddenly barked, "Stay right there. Don't move."
Faye Vaughn froze, stopping in her tracks.
Liam Linden's expression was grim as he held an instrument and swept it around Faye Vaughn.
The device immediately let out a piercing BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
