Chapter 22 - CHAPTER TWENTY TWO:The Blood Oath

The wind howled through the ancient forest like a wounded spirit.

Leaves trembled on the towering black pines as the moon climbed higher into the night sky, bathing the land in cold silver light. Somewhere in the distance, wolves howled—a long, haunting cry that echoed through the valley like a warning.

Ayla felt it in her bones.

Something was wrong.

She stood at the edge of the cliff overlooking the pack lands, her arms wrapped around herself as the cold night air brushed against her skin. The scent of pine and damp earth filled her lungs, but beneath it was another smell.

Blood.

Her wolf stirred uneasily inside her.

"They're coming," the voice whispered in her mind.

Ayla closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing.

For weeks now the dreams had been growing stronger. Visions. Fragments of memories that weren't fully hers.

Burning villages.

Screaming wolves.

A throne made of bones.

And a man standing in the middle of it all with eyes like molten gold.

Kael.

Her forbidden mate.

Just thinking his name made her heart tighten painfully.

She hadn't seen him in three days.

Not since the council meeting ended in chaos.

Not since the elders discovered the truth.

That the Alpha of the Shadow Pack…

Had bonded with the daughter of their greatest enemy.

Ayla.

A witch-blooded wolf.

A curse.

A mistake.

Or perhaps something far worse.

Behind her, footsteps approached.

Slow. Heavy.

Familiar.

"You shouldn't be out here alone."

The deep voice sent a shiver down her spine.

Ayla didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Kael.

The air itself seemed to change when he was near. Thicker. Charged with something dangerous and magnetic all at once.

She turned slowly.

He stood a few feet away, moonlight illuminating the sharp angles of his face. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his golden eyes glowed faintly in the night.

But tonight something else was in them.

Fear.

And Kael never looked afraid.

"You've been avoiding me," Ayla said quietly.

His jaw tightened.

"For your safety."

She almost laughed.

"My safety?" she repeated. "Or your reputation as Alpha?"

A flicker of anger crossed his face.

"You think this is about reputation?"

His voice dropped lower.

"The elders want you dead, Ayla."

The words hung in the cold air between them.

She felt them like a knife sliding between her ribs.

Still… she wasn't surprised.

Of course they did.

Ever since the prophecy surfaced, whispers had been spreading through the pack like wildfire.

A witch-blooded mate will either save the wolves… or destroy them all.

No one seemed interested in finding out which.

"They won't dare," Ayla said.

Kael stepped closer.

"They already have."

Her breath caught.

"What do you mean?"

He hesitated for a moment before reaching into the inside pocket of his jacket. He pulled out a folded piece of parchment and handed it to her.

The seal of the Alpha Council was stamped in black wax.

Ayla opened it slowly.

Her hands trembled as she read the single sentence written across the page.

Execution Order — Ayla Ravenshade.

Her vision blurred.

Issued by unanimous vote of the Alpha Council.

Effective immediately.

For the crime of corrupting the bloodline of the Shadow Pack.

For a moment the world felt very quiet.

Too quiet.

Then she looked up at him.

"And you?" she asked softly.

"Did you vote with them?"

Kael's expression darkened.

"You know I didn't."

His voice came out rough, almost dangerous.

"I threatened to rip the council chamber apart."

That sounded more like him.

"But threats aren't enough anymore," he continued. "They're planning to move tonight."

Ayla felt the weight of the truth settle over her.

They were hunting her.

Not just the elders.

The entire Alpha Council.

The most powerful wolves in the territories.

All coming for her.

One girl.

One forbidden mate.

One prophecy.

"Then I guess running is the logical option," she said bitterly.

Kael grabbed her wrist suddenly.

His grip was firm but not painful.

"You're not running."

His golden eyes burned into hers.

"You're staying with me."

Her heart skipped.

"Kael—"

"I won't let them touch you."

The raw intensity in his voice made something inside her chest ache.

"You don't understand," Ayla whispered.

"If they kill me… the prophecy dies with me."

"And if they kill you?" she shot back.

Silence fell between them.

The wind picked up, rustling the trees violently.

Kael's voice dropped into a quiet growl.

"They won't."

"You're one Alpha against twelve."

"I've faced worse odds."

Ayla shook her head.

"This isn't a battle you can win with claws and teeth."

He studied her carefully.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Her stomach tightened.

There was something she hadn't told him yet.

Something she had seen in her visions.

Something terrifying.

"The prophecy…"

Kael waited.

She swallowed hard.

"It doesn't say I might destroy the wolves."

His brows furrowed.

"What does it say?"

Ayla forced the words out.

"It says my mate will."

The air went still.

Even the forest seemed to pause.

Kael stared at her.

Unmoving.

For the first time since she met him…

The Alpha of the Shadow Pack looked shaken.

"You believe that?" he asked quietly.

Ayla didn't answer.

Because deep down…

She wasn't afraid of the prophecy.

She was afraid it might be true.

Suddenly—

A distant howl split through the forest.

Sharp.

Commanding.

Kael's head snapped toward the trees.

His expression darkened instantly.

"They're here."

Ayla's heart began to race.

Already?

Another howl answered the first.

Then another.

Then several more.

The sound echoed through the mountains like war drums.

Kael grabbed her hand.

"Stay behind me."

Ayla's wolf stirred violently.

The ground beneath them seemed to vibrate as powerful presences entered the forest.

One.

Two.

Three.

More.

Too many.

Figures began to emerge from the darkness between the trees.

Tall silhouettes with glowing eyes.

The Alpha Council.

The leader stepped forward.

A massive wolf-shifter with silver hair and cruel amber eyes.

Alpha Magnus.

The oldest and most feared Alpha in the territories.

His gaze landed on Ayla.

Cold.

Judging.

"You should have surrendered peacefully, child."

Kael stepped in front of her instantly.

His aura exploded outward like wildfire.

"No one touches her."

Magnus chuckled darkly.

"You would start a war for a cursed mate?"

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

A tense silence fell across the clearing.

Then Magnus sighed.

"Pity."

His eyes flashed.

"Kill them both."

In an instant—

The forest erupted into chaos.

Wolves lunged forward.

Claws flashed.

Teeth bared.

Kael shoved Ayla backward.

"RUN!"

But she didn't.

Because at that exact moment—

Something ancient woke up inside her.

Power surged through her veins like lightning.

The wind began to swirl violently around the clearing.

The ground cracked beneath her feet.

And Ayla realized something terrifying.

The prophecy…

Was beginning.
