Chapter 16 - The Flame Within

The battlefield had fallen silent.

Only the wind remained, whistling across the jagged cliffs and scorched earth. The last traces of Kazan's blazing power lingered faintly, flickering like dying embers before slowly fading into the air. He stood at the center of the destruction, chest heaving, sweat and ash coating his skin. His eyes, once full of youthful curiosity, now burned with a fierce determination that made even the mountains tremble.

Riki stepped closer, his hand still tightly gripping the hilt of his sword. "Kazan… it's over. You did it."

But Kazan didn't respond.

He stood completely still. Head lowered. Fists clenched. His gaze was fixed on a spot far in the distance, where the dark clouds still swirled ominously above the mountains. The flames inside him had not fully settled. They flickered strangely, bright yet erratic, like a storm threatening to erupt.

"Kazan?" Riki called again, more cautiously this time. His voice carried a mixture of concern and fear. He had seen the boy control the Fire Sword with incredible skill, yet something about the aura now was different. Something unfamiliar.

The air grew heavy around Kazan, pressing against his chest as if it were alive. The ground beneath him trembled, responding to the raw energy he had unleashed moments ago. Then, faintly at first, a dark flame flickered across his hand. A shadow within the fire, black as night, pulsed in time with his heartbeat.

Riki's eyes widened. "Wait… that's not your fire…"

Kazan slowly lifted his head. His usual bright, golden flame burned in his right eye—but the left eye glowed a deep, sinister red, almost like molten shadow. The air around him shivered, a low hum vibrating through the rocks beneath their feet.

"I… I can still feel it…" Kazan whispered. His voice sounded strange, layered, deeper. It wasn't just his own—it was as if something else was speaking with him from within.

Riki instinctively stepped back. "Kazan… what's happening? You're scaring me!"

Kazan's hands trembled as the flames shifted uncontrollably. The light danced across his arms, morphing from golden brilliance to dark crimson shadows in mere moments. Every flicker radiated an almost sentient force.

"It won't stop…" he muttered, barely above a whisper. "The power… it's still growing…"

Then, as if responding to his words, a voice echoed—not in the air, but inside his mind. Cold, distant, and filled with contempt.

You are weak…

Kazan froze. His heart skipped a beat. "Who's there?" he whispered.

Riki's brow furrowed. "Did you say something?"

The voice came again, louder, more insistent. You cannot control this power… but I can.

Kazan clutched his head, staggering. "No… get out of my mind!"

"Focus, Kazan! It's not real!" Riki shouted, stepping toward him with his sword raised.

But Kazan's gaze was locked inward, fighting an invisible enemy. The dark flame surged, swirling violently around his body, sending shockwaves that cracked the nearby rocks. He felt it trying to take over—his will clashing against the insidious presence inside.

"It's real…" he breathed. "It's inside me… controlling me…"

The dark energy pulsed violently, coiling like a serpent. A wave of heat and shadow exploded outward, forcing Riki back several feet. "Kazan! Stop! You're losing yourself!"

Kazan's chest heaved. He could feel the shadow inside pushing, clawing, demanding dominance. Let go… stop resisting…

"No!" Kazan shouted, his voice echoing like a battle horn. "This power is mine!"

Then prove it, the voice hissed.

The flames erupted violently. The shockwave knocked rocks and debris into the air, and the wind howled through the cliffs like a living thing. The shadows coiled around him, trying to consume his fire. Kazan struggled to breathe, his entire body shaking as he fought for control.

Riki staggered forward, eyes wide with desperation. "Kazan! I won't fight you! You're my brother!"

For a fleeting moment, Kazan's eyes softened. Something human flickered behind the crimson shadow. Riki thought he saw a hint of his brother's old self—a spark of warmth, a recognition. But then the darkness surged again, relentless.

Weakness…

Kazan lifted his hands. The dark flames exploded outward in a violent wave, more controlled now, but filled with undeniable force. Rocks split, trees were scorched, and the wind carried the sound of the flame like a thousand roaring fires.

Riki barely had time to raise his sword in defense. The shockwave struck him, throwing him backward, rolling across the ground before he came to a halt. He struggled to rise, coughing as dust and smoke clouded his vision.

"I… I have to reach him…" Riki whispered to himself. His heart pounded. He knew Kazan was still in there, somewhere beneath the dark flame.

Kazan's entire being seemed to split between two forces—the familiar fire that warmed his soul and the shadow that sought dominance. He could hear the voice now, louder, more insistent. Give in… let me take control…

"No!" Kazan's scream cut through the wind. "I am the flame! I am Kazan!"

With a roar, he thrust his hands forward, unleashing a controlled wave of fire so intense it scorched the ground in front of him. The dark flame resisted, writhing and twisting—but Kazan's will was stronger. Slowly, painstakingly, the shadow began to dissipate, melting into the golden fire of his own making.

Riki rushed forward cautiously. "Kazan…?"

Kazan's chest heaved, sweat and ash mixing with blood from small cuts on his arms. His eyes—both now burning with bright fire—locked onto his brother. Relief and exhaustion mingled in his gaze.

"I… I did it," he whispered, voice trembling. "I controlled it… the shadow can't take over. Not now… not ever."

Riki smiled, kneeling beside him. "You did it, Kazan. You really did it."

The wind calmed. The trembling earth stilled. The flames around Kazan's body settled into a steady, controlled blaze. His power, once wild and unpredictable, now felt like an extension of himself—alive, responsive, and ready.

But deep down, both brothers knew this was only the beginning. Somewhere, beyond the mountains and the clouds, a darker force waited—observing, biding its time. And Kazan's awakening had not gone unnoticed.

The Master Emerald pulsed faintly in the distance, sensing the surge of power. It responded to Kazan's strength, humming with energy that seemed almost sentient.

Kazan clenched his fists, the warmth of his fire radiating from him like a living heart. "We've survived this trial," he said softly. "But the battles ahead… they'll be even greater."

Riki nodded, standing tall beside him. "Then we face them together."

The fire within Kazan flared, wings of golden flame extending skyward, illuminating the night. The first step had been taken. The Guardian had awakened fully. And the world, with all its darkness and danger, would soon learn the true meaning of the Flame Within.
