Chapter 40 - Does A Door Go In Or Out?

The weekend passed in a flash.

Then it was Monday.

Silas walked out of the shower, headed to the wardrobe and put on some clothes.

Seeing as he had to pick up Alice as well as Kate on the way, he needed to leave earlier.

Heading down the stairs towards the kitchen he pondered if he had cheese or if it was out.

After he arrived in the kitchen he threw together a sandwich and sat down at the kitchen island and began to eat.

And no he didn't have cheese, which made the sandwich kinda dry. Not enjoyable.

After eating he threw the dishes in the sink and headed out.

On his way out of the kitchen he grabbed his keys and phone on the table.

He also texted Alice that he would be there in 10 minutes.

Arriving at his car he got in and sped off.

Forks.

Cullen House.

"Alice, hurry Silas is soon here." Esme called from outside.

Alice was choosing between what top to wear.

"Yeah, one second."

She tried on both, but decided on a button up shirt and vest.

Just then her phone vibrated.

Silas text: I'm outside

Alice hurried down the stairs and met Esme on the way.

"He's here."

Alice nodded as she put on her shoes.

"I know he texted."

She looked in the mirror hanging in the hallway.

Esme smiled.

"You look beautiful."

Alice smiled.

"Thanks."

She hurried out the door.

Silas was listening to music and rolling his thumbs.

Sigh.

I told her to be ready. No matter what time or world, women take an awfully long time to get ready.

Just then he saw the front door opening and Alice stepped out.

At least she's hurrying. Silas mused.

He raised an eyebrow. She had put extra effort in that outfit, he could tell.

Maybe… the extra time was justified.

Silas watched as she drew closer and soon opened the car door.

"Hello, Silas, sorry I was late."

"It's fine." Silas looked her up and down. "You look good."

Alice smiled sweetly.

"Thanks."

Hehe, I knew he would notice.

Silas watched her smile and smiled as well.

He was just about to drive when he thought of something. She's spent this long on an outfit… but no makeup?

She looks good without, but most girls still like to put on a little.

Hmm. Now that I think about it, makeup wouldn't work on a vampire, no?

Since their skin is cold and makeup is supposed to be on warm skin.

Although I don't know, I think that might be the reason she doesn't have any.

Just then.

"Aren't you driving a little slow?" Alice said.

Silas looked over, and raised an eyebrow. Slow? Him?

"Am I? I'm driving 10 over the speed limit."

Alice smiled.

"Yeah, slow."

Silas looked at her and let out an exasperated chuckle.

"So you want me to drive faster?" Silas asked.

Alice smiled teasingly.

"Yeah… if you're comfortable otherwise it's fine."

Silas felt his eyelid twitch. This has to be rage bait?

But what could he do? If he didn't… wouldn't that mean he admitted to being scared?

A brilliant move, I couldn't have done it better.

Silas smiled self-deprecatingly as he sped up. The speed kept rising.

Alice smiled as he felt the increasing speed, the trees blurred more for every second that passed.

Silas pulled the turn signal lever and overtook the car they had caught up with.

Alice glanced at the speedometer. 90 mph. To her it wasn't that much, she could run faster.

But… Silas, if he crashed? Wouldn't he be dead?

"Maybe you should slow down?" Alice said. She now regretted provoking him.

Silas smiled. The regret came that fast?

"What? Are you uncomfortable?"

Alice heard that and pouted. No fair.

"What if we crash?" Alice asked, still worried.

Silas raised an eyebrow.

"If you're uncomfortable, just say so."

Alice cursed. What a bully.

"Yes. I'm uncomfortable." Alice said as she looked out the window.

Silas was surprised, he didn't think she would actually say it.

He let go of the gas and returned to barely legal speeds.

As they drove down the road, Silas felt a little guilty. Especially when he saw how Alice was pouting looking out the window. She had lost her previous energy.

I guess I'll have to be the bigger person.

"Alice, I'm sorry I didn't listen."

She looked over.

"You bullied me."

Silas lips twitched. Hold it in, don't laugh.

"Yeah, sorry." You bullied me first! Sigh. I can't say that.

Alice raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"Really."

After Silas answered, a smile returned on her face.

"Good. I was worried about what might happen if we crashed."

Hypocrisy.

Silas almost scoffed.

"Didn't you say I was driving too slow?"

Alice glanced over.

"Yes, but I only wanted you to speed up a little."

How specific. Silas cursed.

As they talked they arrived at Kate's house.

Silas parked by the side of the road, and honked.

A few seconds later Kate ran out and arrived at the passenger door. She opened but then froze.

"What?" She met Alice's eyes and then looked at Silas.

Silas smiled apologetically.

"I'm giving Alice a ride, so you'll have to take the backseat."

Kate frowned for a second but then returned to normal.

"Okay."

She closed the passenger door and got in the back.

Silas looked back.

"You got a seatbelt?"

Kate pulled the seatbelt on her chest.

"Yeah."

Silas nodded.

"Good."

"Let's go."

After he said that he started to drive out of the neighborhood.

Silas looked in the rearview mirror and asked Kate.

"Has your weekend been good?"

Kate, who was lost in thought snapped out, she turned to look at Silas in front.

"Yeah, It's been alright."

Silas nodded.

"Good."

Kate was silent for a second or two.

"What about yours?"

Silas smiled.

"It's been calm, Saturday and Sunday have been relaxing."

Kate nodded.

Silas turned to Alice.

"What about you Alice?"

She smiled.

"Its been good, I've just read some books, taking it slow."

Silas nodded.

Just then he turned and drove into the parking lot.

After circling once he found an empty spot and reversed in.

As he killed the engine he spoke.

"Alright, let's get out."

Silas reached for the door handle and stepped out, Alice and Kate stepped out only a second later.

"Do you have your bags?"

"Yeah." 2x

Silas nodded.

"Let's go."
