Chapter 17 - Main suspect

Miss Thornhill was giving the class as always, showcasing the nature of sexual reproduction of plants, none of that mattering to me after I read all the text books twice a lot of time ago.

I looked next to me at Wednesday who was half interested in the class and the other half was surely focused on the mystery.

Her eyes darted to her side where Xavier was, and she stared at his neck, making me look too.

Two cuts, they seemed deep tearing muscle through, not even a bandage covering it.

I stood up and put a hand on his neck which made him yelp, taking the attention of everyone around us, silencing the class.

"Dude if you get hurt you know you can tell me..." I said while I inspected the wound.

"I know man, just..." He seemed lost with his reason to not tell me, looking at me and Wednesday both unsure.

Wednesday looked at him and stood up.

"Miss Thornhill, Dante and I will take Xavier to the infirmary, he's hurt."

"Ehh, sure Wednesday make sure he's alright ok?" Thornhill said to us before we left the class.

We walked alongside of eachother me being in between Xavier and Wednesday, the girl still scrutinizing with her eyes the wound which Xavier was trying to cover with his hand.

"Let me look." I said taking away his hand, and closing the wounds easily, but now that I healed them, I noticed the same thing Wednesday did.

"Care to explain why do you have that wound?" Wednesday asked rapidly.

"I got it while fencing, nothing special." He said covering his neck even after the wounds were healed.

"Well man I don't know but may I ask..."

"Well you've been acting weird, since I started going out with Wednesday to reveal the mystery about the monster, you've been distant with me, even looking at me bad faces when I'm not looking..." I said, my eyes locked to his, the idea of him being the monster now growing inside of me.

It would be the only thing that makes sense, once I beaten him up in the woods when he killed Rowan, he could've started hating me for almost getting him.

"Look man I don't know what you're talking about."

"You do, so be assured that any attempt to run away of telling us the truth will become unsuccessful." Wednesday said.

" 'us'..." Xavier repeated looking away with a frown on his face.

"Look at you so happy, just get the hell away from me you two." He said walking away towards the infirmary.

As soon as he turned his back Wednesday was going to follow him but I grabbed her by the shoulder stopping her.

"Don't be reckless, you suspect he's the monster?" I said looking at her in the eyes.

"I suspect he has something to do with it, either be the monster or working with it." Wednesday said, not pulling my hand from her shoulder.

"I don't understand what he meant with that us..." I said looking at the empty hall.

"Seems he's attached to either you or me, and dislike the idea of one being this close to the other..." She said quickly assuming the most plausible cause.

"So he's jealous?"

"Surely of you, being inmortal should make everyone jealous." She responded, this time taking the wrong answer.

Now that she explained it, it wouldn't make sense that one, he has been friends with me a time by now and he only seems to be distant when I'm with Wednesday or talk about her.

"He's jealous of me yes, but because I'm closer to you than he's to you."

My answer made Wednesday eyebrow to perk up in a "explain yourself".

"Well whenever I speak with you or talk about that I've been with you solving this mystery, he seems to suddenly go distant and not care."

"Obviously it'd make sense if he was connected to the monster, but has he shown some attraction to you?" I asked to Wednesday who looked down, remembering each interaction with Xavier, now looking with different eyes each gesture and moves.

"He does indeed..." she said, almost not wanting to admit that he may not be connected to the monster.

"But still, the cut was pretty similar to the ones the monster did to me and Rowan, I think it's best to look out to him."

Wednesday looked and me and I looked back at her, and a smile appeared in our faces at the thought of closing ourselves to this case.

...

In the woods

...

"What is it?" Wednesday asked as we were both behind some trees watching Xavier leave the shed.

"It's an old building they gave him permission to use as an art studio after he cleaned it out."

"Do you believe it has something?"

"Last time I was in here was around 1 month ago, it may have changed." I said to her while we both stopped lurking behind the trunk.

"Why were you here anyway?" Wednesday asked, not finding a reason for me to be here before.

"Learn to draw and paint, I became pretty good with angles and colors..." I said while opening the door, Wednesday entering before me.

"..."

"Something wrong?" I said entering behind her watching her lost expression.

"Everyone's got a muse..." She said to me while I finally looked.

Every part, corner, side and maybe even to the ground, it wass filled with either paintings, drawings and not a single canvas wasted.

All of them being of the monster, all of them with a detail it's almost like a picture.

"I can't believe it..." I whispered in awe watching them all, even after the sudden distance between Xavier and me, I still held to the idea of him not being the monster.

"Need more proof?" Wednesday said sarcastically next to me.

I turned around and looked at her in the eye, a frown on my face with a half smile.

"Why even ask..."

...

...

...

"In all of my twisted ideas I never thought I'd be going the dorm of a boy who likes me to study him..." Wednesday whispered to me while we snuck inside the dorm, every light turned off, her guided by me.

My irises closing tightly so the small trays of hue from the moon allowed me to watch better in the darkness, slowly going moving towards Xavier sleeping body.

I softly tapped Wednesday shoulder and she got her hand inside her backpack, handing me a syringe with a small needle, it would take precision and patience to induce a full unconsciousness, but it's the best choice to not wake him up mid process.

I grabbed syringe filled with anesthesia, and softly moved his head to the side where I started pushing the needle deep inside his neck and pushed the liquid inside.

His body tensing for a brief second before calming down again.

"Ready?" Wednesday asked me and I simply nodded.

She turned on a flashlight and put it over us, then I removed the blanket over Xavier body.

I softly passed my hands just over his body, from his hands to the shoulders and from the shoulders to the torso and then from the torso to his feet.

Then after minutes repeating this process and I put my hands on his head, messing around analyzing his brain searching for anything different that could tell me something.

"So?" Wednesday asked me curious, for her, the only thing I did was being a perv touching someone unconscious.

"He's completely normal, and I find nothing that could trigger a transformation or even a hidden power..." I said, most outcast have either the same kind of body, only few exceptions are races who turn into different things.

Mermaids, werewolves and shapeshifters aren't don't stick to thar universal rule, whereas they change a lot, and even in the most "humanoid" stage of themselves they still are a lot different.

For example once I healed Enid who tripped down the stairs while excitedly leaving to see Ajax, the fall was easily one to kill somebody, but the only thing she had was a small bruise in the face, and after healing her forehead I also caught her skull bones were extremely different to regular ones, it was tougher; my only conclusion.

"He doesn't show any sign of being able to transform to the monster, neither he shows any sign of the damage I did to the monster before..." I whispered to Wednesday while pulling the blanket up.

"How long you said it'll be?"

"8 hours." Wednesday responded cold.

"He's skipping classes..." I said sitting down a chair in front of a canvas.

Wednesday looked at me as she turned on the light of the room, pocketing her flashlight.

"Then what do you think the drawings means?" Wednesday asked, her mind still wondering over the shed in the woods.

"Vincent Thorpe..." I whispered, my mind finally going down to something, he's a rich kid , his father is rich and also why he's part of a circle of big families.

"What?"

"He's a CEO of some things here and there and a millionaire guy who has enough to live for thousands of years without lifting a finger, also Xavier told me he's a well known psychic who used his power to go up the corporate ladder." I said finally connecting the clues.

"You mean to tell me he's having visions of the monster? If so then he should've touched something related to it."

"Not entirely, he told me his father saw the future through dreams and used it to his advantage, sleeping before every meeting." I said snapping my fingers while I smiled towards Wednesday.

"Case solved then..." Wednesday said letting go a sign of disappointment.

"Don't look so sad, it's better to respond an answer than dwelling into a rabbit hole, no?" I said closing to her, my hands on her shoulders.

"I suppose, but that leave us in the same place as before."

"With more knowledge than before, and that is better." I said trying to pull her off her self disappointment.

She let go another sign and put her hands over mine pushing them off her shoulders.

"Enid's out for the night to meet up with Ajax."

"You mean?"

"Come if you want, it's an invitation, if you say no I won't beg." She said leaving faster than I could respond.

"Damn..."

"She's really good at this of leaving my heart pumping..." I said finally catching a breath while putting my hand on my chest, the feeling of it bumping really fast finally calming down.
