Chapter 8
Obtaining a Ship
One day after the events had ended,
Arthur, Zoro, Nami, and Luffy were sitting in one of the village restaurants, enjoying their meal.
Well…
the scene was not entirely calm.
Luffy was devouring the food with wild appetite, as though the table itself were fighting a losing battle against him.
The others, meanwhile, ate at a slower pace, watching him with the faint smiles they had grown used to.
As soon as they finished, Luffy wiped his mouth and said in a decisive tone:
"Hmmm… It's true that we still haven't gotten a ship,
but we had a good time here.
There's nothing left for us to do in this village…
We're leaving today."
They exchanged glances, then smiled in agreement.
He was right. Nothing tied them to this place anymore.
At that moment, the restaurant door opened quietly.
"I knew I'd find you here."
The voice was soft, calm, and familiar.
Everyone turned.
Kaya was standing at the entrance.
"Kaya! How are you feeling now?"
Nami asked at once, genuine reassurance evident in her voice.
Kaya smiled brightly and said with a confidence she had never known before:
"I don't know how it happened…
but I'm completely fine.
Not only has my severe wound healed,
but even the illness that stayed with me for years has disappeared.
I feel as though I've been born again."
Then she turned toward Arthur
and bowed to him with sincere respect and gratitude.
"It's all thanks to you, Arthur."
Arthur smiled gently and replied without affectation:
"There's no need for that.
I only did what anyone would have done if they possessed a remedy in such a situation."
Arthur had previously explained the matter of the treatment to the crew,
but he had not told them the entire truth.
He mentioned that he had a legendary mentor who taught him combat and granted him this remedy,
and told them he possessed only five of them,
one of which had been used to save Kaya.
It was not an outright lie.
He truly had a mentor in his previous world,
and he had learned from him how to craft remedies,
though not a miraculous cure like that legendary elixir.
Later, he had inquired about the elixir from the system.
'System, does this elixir have the power to cure illnesses as well?'
| The elixir possesses great and absolute healing capabilities, yes.
But you cannot use it to cure diseases.
Its sole function is to save those who stand on the brink of death. |
Arthur thought for a moment.
'So I cannot heal ordinary patients,
nor even severe illnesses,
unless the patient is only one step away from death?'
| Exactly.
You can cure any disease with this elixir,
but only when the patient is on their deathbed.
If you attempt to use it before that,
a catastrophic reaction will occur:
the user's body will explode within a radius of two hundred meters.
You must be cautious. |
'Damn… A miracle cure, yet bound by so many rules.
Even in a world filled with Devil Fruits and supernatural phenomena,
this elixir surpasses all logic.'
| Of course. |
What do you mean "of course"? Are you proud or something?
No response came.
Now, in the restaurant—
Kaya said after a brief hesitation:
"I heard you're looking for a ship… aren't you?"
Luffy's face lit up immediately.
"Are you going to give us a ship?!"
Kaya smiled and said simply:
"Follow me."
She left the restaurant, and the crew followed her.
After only a few minutes of walking, they reached the dock.
A man was standing there waiting for them,
and as soon as he saw them, he bowed deeply in respect.
"Thank you…
for saving the village,
and for saving my lady."
His tone was sincere, filled with gratitude.
Everyone smiled instinctively.
The man said, gesturing behind him:
"It's true that she's a bit old,
but I designed her myself.
She is a real ship,
large and sturdy,
and powered by sails."
Then he added proudly:
"Her name is… Going Merry."
Everyone's eyes widened in astonishment,
and their hearts swelled with joy.
At last…
a real ship.
At that moment,
a loud shout came from the top of the slope above them.
Everyone turned.
Usopp was tumbling down toward them,
carrying on his back an enormous bag nearly larger than himself.
"What is that idiot doing?"
Arthur said in confusion.
"It doesn't matter.
If we don't stop him, he'll crash into the ship."
Zoro said it while standing beside Luffy.
In a single instant,
the two of them raised their feet at the same time,
and Usopp's face collided with them…
bringing him to an immediate halt.
It turned out that Usopp had decided to set sail as well that day.
"Why are you sailing in that tiny boat?"
Luffy asked in confusion.
Usopp replied with feigned pride and confidence:
"What do you mean? Of course I'm sailing!
I'll become a pirate,
and perhaps we'll meet one day on the open sea."
Zoro shook his head impatiently.
"What are you talking about?
Get on the ship, you idiot."
He pointed toward the Going Merry.
Luffy looked at Usopp with a wide smile.
"You're our friend… right?"
Usopp froze for a second,
then burst with joy and jumped, shouting:
"I am the capta—"
Before he could finish,
his eyes fell upon Arthur,
who was standing beside Luffy, watching him calmly.
Usopp swallowed his words at once,
then smiled and climbed aboard the ship without adding a single syllable.
And so…
The companions set sail once more toward a new adventure,
an adventure that would one day be written in the pages of history.
"A toast to the new ship,
and a toast to the new member joining us!"
Luffy said enthusiastically.
The cups clinked together
between Luffy, Zoro, Arthur, Nami, and Usopp,
and the Straw Hat crew celebrated the beginning of a new chapter in their journey.
