Caelan Moonfang
The fire had begun the moment Rain left. At first, I didn't panic, not when I saw it as an opportunity to end it all, but Alvin wouldn't let me. He fought with everything he had to push me out while the flames consumed him.
I wasn't stupid. To Rain, I was more than a mate. I was his escape, his only path to power, so it must have been his brothers or even the king. But nothing mattered. It was better to die at the hands of an enemy than of loved ones.
Watching Prince Rain cling to me, holding on desperately as the guards dragged me away, something broke within me. His tears felt real. His pain felt real. But then it was his decision, his insistence, that had led to Alvin's death.
Nothing else mattered.
So, pushing him away, despite the protest from my wolf who wanted nothing but to reach out and hold him, was exactly what I did.
