Chapter 8 - Episode 8 - The Lie

Seo-yeon woke earlier than usual.

Not because she wanted to.

But because fear didn't let her sleep properly anymore.

Her eyes opened slowly, adjusting to the dim light filtering through her curtains. For a moment, she didn't move.

She listened.

The house was quiet.

But not silent.

There were voices.

Her parents.

Low.

Careful.

Different.

Seo-yeon sat up slowly.

Something about their tone made her chest tighten.

It wasn't the relaxed, casual way they normally spoke in the mornings.

It was restrained.

Heavy.

She slid out of bed and moved toward the door quietly.

Her bare feet made no sound against the floor.

She opened the door just slightly.

Enough to see the kitchen.

Her parents sat at the table.

Facing each other.

Not eating.

Not smiling.

Just sitting.

Her father stared down at something in his hands.

Her mother's fingers were clasped tightly together.

Seo-yeon had never seen them like this before.

They looked smaller.

Weaker.

Human.

She leaned closer to the wall, hiding herself.

Her heart pounded quietly.

She didn't know why she felt afraid.

Then she saw it.

An envelope.

On the table.

White.

Ordinary.

But the letters printed across it were unmistakable.

FINAL NOTICE

Her stomach dropped.

She knew that envelope.

She had received dozens of them in her first life.

Rent.

Bills.

Warnings.

Threats disguised as paperwork.

Her breathing slowed.

Her father spoke first.

"We can't delay anymore."

His voice was quiet.

Defeated.

Seo-yeon froze.

She had never heard him sound like that before.

Her father had always been steady.

Reliable.

Strong.

But now—

He sounded tired.

"I know," her mother replied softly.

Her father picked up the envelope.

His fingers tightened around it slightly.

"I'll handle it today."

Handle it.

Her mind raced.

Today.

That meant—

June 12.

The same day he grabbed his keys.

The same day he left the house.

The same day—

Her chest tightened painfully.

Her mother looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

He nodded slowly.

But he didn't look sure.

Seo-yeon realized something she had never understood before.

Her parents weren't leaving casually.

They weren't going out for errands.

They were going because they had to.

Because something forced them to.

Her mother spoke again, quieter now.

"We shouldn't tell her."

Seo-yeon stopped breathing.

Her father nodded.

"She needs to focus on school."

Her hands began trembling.

They were hiding it from her.

Protecting her.

Even while they were drowning themselves.

Her vision blurred.

In her first life, she never noticed.

She went to school.

Complained about homework.

Worried about meaningless things.

While her parents carried burdens she never saw.

While they walked toward the moment that would destroy everything.

Her throat tightened.

She had thought of herself as the victim of tragedy.

But now she realized—

They were victims too.

Her parents weren't invincible.

They were fragile.

Human.

And alone.

She pressed her hand against the wall to steady herself.

Her breathing was uneven.

This changed everything.

The accident wasn't random.

It wasn't meaningless.

It was connected to this.

This envelope.

This decision.

This burden.

If she wanted to save them—

She needed to understand this.

Not the accident.

But the reason behind it.

Because fate didn't begin on the road.

It began here.

At this table.

With this envelope.

With this lie.

Seo-yeon closed her eyes slowly.

In her first life, she was blind.

This time—

She would see everything.
