The first light of dawn touched the forest clearing as Aipom and Turtwig locked into another intense sparring session. Ash stood at the edge of the grass, his eyes narrow, analyzing every twitch of their muscle.

"Ooh-hoo!" Aipom's tail-hand glowed with a blinding white light as she activated Agility, closing the gap in a blur. She unleashed a fully charged Focus Punch, aiming to catch the turtle off-guard.

"Turrr!" Turtwig didn't scramble. He executed the "Subtle Step," tucking his head into his shell as the glowing tail-hand whistled inches above him. The moment the kinetic force passed, he lunged out, his jaws clamping onto Aipom's tail with a vice-like Bite.

"Mon-mon!" Aipom panicked. Her primary weapon was trapped. She thrashed, but the turtle was a grounded anchor. Recalling her battle with Jessie's Carnivine, she pivoted her strategy. Reaching around, she used her small hands to vigorously Tickle Turtwig's armpits.

"Turrr Turrr" The turtle erupted into a fit of laughter, his grip loosening instantly. Aipom scrambled back, putting a safe distance between them as she massaged her tail.

Clap! Clap!

"Excellent improvisation, Aipom!" Ash said, walking over with a wide grin. "Using Tickle to break a clinch is high-level thinking. And Turtwig, your shell-work is becoming second nature. You're both ready."

From the campsite, Dawn watched the scene with a mix of awe and curiosity. "Does he always start this early? No wonder his Pokémon are so disciplined."

"As a Trainer, these hours are where the badges are actually won," Brock replied, packing the last of the breakfast cookware. "Ash has realized that growth isn't just about the battle; it's about the bond formed in the quiet moments."

"Hey, Ash! Time to move!" Brock shouted. "We need to clear that mountain pass today if we want to see Oreburgh's skyline by sunset."

Because they were still off the beaten path, the journey was a grueling trek through dense, waist-high brush. Territorial Beedrill buzzed in the distance, and the occasional roar of a wild Ursaring kept them on high alert. Ash sent Scizor to the front.

The crimson warrior moved with mechanical precision, its sharp pincers glowing with Slash energy as it rhythmically cleared the path. Snip. Snip. Snip.

"The vegetation here is so thick," Dawn complained, shielding her face from a stray branch.

"It's nothing compared to Kanto's Viridian Forest," Brock said, checking the compass. "There, the vines are like iron cables. This is just a stroll."

Ash watched Scizor work. While the Bug/Steel type was effective, it felt almost disrespectful to use a Gym-level powerhouse as a lawnmower. He briefly considered catching a utility Pokémon for "Cut," but dismissed the thought. Every slot in his six-man roster was a dedicated combatant; he couldn't afford a specialist for chores.

"Clack!" Scizor signaled from the front. The dense brush gave way to a rocky ridge.

"You've worked hard, Scizor. Return!" Ash recalled the tired assassin, allowing it to rest before tomorrow's big match.

"Pidgeot!" "Star!"

Above them, the two birds dived from the clouds, their high-speed descent creating a sonic hum that made Dawn cover her ears. Pidgeot landed with a majestic flare of its wings, while the smaller bird pulled out of its dive with a shimmering, blue-white aura—the unmistakable trail of Aerial Ace.

"You did it, Starly! You mastered the move!" Ash cheered.

The bird let out a piercing, triumphant cry. Suddenly, its body was engulfed in the brilliant white light of evolution. The silhouette stretched, the wings thickened, and a prominent, forward-curling crest of feathers emerged from its head. When the light faded, a fierce Staravia stood before them.

"Staravia! Welcome to the team, buddy!" Ash laughed, running his hand over the bird's impressive new crest.

"He's so cool!" Dawn said, her envy momentarily replaced by excitement. "That evolution was perfectly timed."

Brock climbed to the top of the ridge and pointed toward the horizon. "Everyone, look! We made it!"

Below them, tucked into a valley of red earth and coal mines, the city of Oreburgh sparkled in the late afternoon light. The massive smokestacks and the grand dome of the Gym were visible even from this distance.

"Staravia just evolved, Scizor is at peak condition, and the Gym is in sight," Ash said, looking at the city with fire in his eyes. "Roark... I hope your rocks are ready to break."
