"Pidgeot, hang in there! Steel Wing, hit it!"
Ash's voice cut through the air of the cavernous mine. He hadn't expected the ancient overlord to be so tenacious, but he knew Pidgeot's heart. As the former protector of the Viridian flock, Pidgeot was no stranger to the brutal trade of blows.
Locked in the clinch of Aerodactyl's Thunder Fang, Pidgeot didn't panic. It endured the agonizing surges of electricity, its enormous wings taking on a blinding metallic sheen. Clack! Clack! Clack! Pidgeot hammered its wings against Aerodactyl's rocky hide with relentless frequency.
Ultimately, the math of the exchange favored the bird. Under the repeated, heavy impact of the Steel Wings, Aerodactyl's grip finally faltered. It hissed in pain, releasing Pidgeot's neck and pulling back into a defensive hover.
"Feather Dance!"
Ash seized the moment. Pidgeot soared above the ancient predator, shedding a flurry of downy feathers imbued with a dampening energy. As the feathers touched Aerodactyl, the "Overlord's" raw physical power began to wane, its attack power significantly diminished.
Roark bit his lip. This Pidgeot was faster than anything his data had prepared him for. He looked at Aerodactyl, which was breathing heavily. He needed to reset the match.
"I'll risk it! Aerodactyl, use Roost!"
Aerodactyl hesitated for a heartbeat. Having been recently revived from a fossil, its synchronization with Roark wasn't perfect yet. But it remembered the warmth of the laboratory and Roark's care. It descended to the jagged floor, folding its wings and closing its eyes as a restorative green aura began to knit its wounds.
"Agility into Steel Wing!" Ash shouted.
Pidgeot became a blur, appearing in front of the grounded Aerodactyl in a fraction of a second. The ancient Pokémon panicked—on the ground, it lacked the leverage to maneuver.
"Encase yourself in Rock Tomb!" Roark yelled.
Boulders erupted from the earth, forming a jagged cocoon around Aerodactyl. It was a desperate shield, but Pidgeot's metallic wings sliced through the stone like it was wet clay. However, the momentary delay was enough. Aerodactyl burst from the rubble and took to the sky once more.
"Hyper Beam!"
Ash had predicted the escape. Pidgeot's beak glowed with a deep purple energy. It locked onto the ascending target.
"Giga Impact!" Roark countered, matching the ultimate move.
Aerodactyl spiraled downward, its body enveloped in a massive, shimmering energy veil. The two ultimate moves collided in the center of the arena. The shockwave blew out several lanterns in the mine, leaving the battlefield in a strobe-light flicker of purple and white.
Boom!
Pidgeot's Hyper Beam roared with the STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) of a veteran Normal-type user, eventually blasting through Aerodactyl's veil. The ancient Pokémon was slammed into the cavern wall, sliding down into the dust. A final, swift Steel Wing from Pidgeot ensured it wouldn't rise again.
"Aerodactyl is unable to battle!" the referee cried, stunned.
Paul sat in the stands, his face a mask of silence. He realized the gap—Ash wasn't just winning; he was out-thinking a Gym Leader who had brought out his personal "Elite" team.
"You did amazing, Pidgeot," Ash said, stroking the bird's crest.
Roark recalled Aerodactyl, his eyes now burning with a fierce, competitive fire. He wasn't upset; he was exhilarated. "I haven't felt this pushed in a long time! But don't think the mine has run dry yet. Go, Rampardos!"
A massive, bipedal dinosaur with a thick, blue-domed skull stepped onto the field. Its crimson eyes were fixed on Pidgeot, and the white spikes along its head and tail glinted dangerously. This was the pinnacle of Fossil evolution—the king of headbutts.
