Chapter 63
At that moment, a faint knocking sound suddenly came from deep within the base.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Yang Jian looked downward, his vision piercing through layers of obstacles: "There's still someone alive down there!"
The weak knocking stood out sharply in the dead-silent base.
"Lower deck!"
Yang Jian's super hearing locked onto the source. He rushed into the base interior first.
Wanda and Echo followed closely. Deadpool ran along while muttering, hoping it wasn't another zombie knocking on a can.
They passed through blood-stained corridors and reached a heavy security door.
Scrawled in blood on the door were crooked words: "Do not open. Monster inside."
The knocking was coming from behind it.
Wanda's chaos magic gathered in her hands, ready: "Be careful!"
Yang Jian simply ripped the lock off. The thick metal door crashed down, revealing pitch-black darkness inside.
Suddenly, a blinding beam of light shot toward them.
"Don't come any closer!"
A hoarse female voice shouted. "I have UV light—zombies are afraid of it!"
Echo narrowed her eyes and barely made out the figure behind the light.
It was an Asian woman in a tattered S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform. Her left hand held a UV lamp, right hand gripped a dagger.
Her face was smeared with dried blood, but her eyes were still sharp.
"Melinda May?"
Deadpool exclaimed. "You're still alive!"
"Deadpool?" Agent May lowered the lamp cautiously.
"Wait—you're the living Deadpool?"
She looked incredulously at the others. "Scarlet Witch? Echo? And who is this…?"
"Yang Jian."
He gave a brief introduction. "We're from a parallel universe."
Agent May's legs suddenly gave out. She slid down the wall and sat on the floor.
The UV lamp slipped from her hand and clattered to the ground, its beam illuminating a figure in the corner.
"There's another survivor!" Wanda rushed over in surprise.
Curled up in the corner was a badly wounded S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
"Coulson?!"
Deadpool's mouth gaped dramatically. "Honest guy, you're still alive!"
Coulson's eyes flickered with exhausted light: "Barely… hanging on."
He looked at Yang Jian. "So… you're here to clean up this mess?"
Yang Jian shook his head: "This universe is beyond saving. But we can take you with us."
He looked at the battered Melinda May and Coulson—both their faces written with shock and despair.
"This world… really has no hope left?"
Coulson leaned weakly against the wall, voice hoarse: "Director Fury, he…"
"He's definitely dead as hell!"
Deadpool interrupted, gesturing wildly.
"I bet he got torn into pieces! Maybe his head's being used as a soccer ball by zombie Captain America right now."
Melinda snapped her head up, eyes holding one last spark of hope.
"Are there any other survivors in the base?"
Wanda gently shook her head and supported Melinda's trembling shoulders: "You two are the last ones."
Echo helped Coulson up. He winced sharply from the wound on his leg.
Deadpool bounced around nearby: "Hey! This is the perfect moment for some cheer! Happiness is the key to survival! Want to hear a joke? Why don't zombies eat Deadpool? Because…"
"Can you shut up?" Coulson protested weakly.
Yang Jian cut off Deadpool's ramble: "How did you two survive?"
Melinda took a deep breath and wiped the blood from her face.
"Fury gathered the remaining heroes to discuss countermeasures. He sent us down here to get equipment."
Her voice cracked slightly: "When we got back, the base had already fallen. Coulson covered my escape… but he got hurt."
Coulson forced a weak smile: "Old routine."
He lifted his bloodstained shirt, revealing a vicious bite mark on his abdomen: "Looks like I won't last much longer… but at least it wasn't a zombie bite."
Deadpool suddenly leaned in and sniffed: "Whoa! You sure you weren't bitten? You're gonna turn any second now!"
Shoo!
Yang Jian fired a heat vision beam and vaporized the rotting flesh around Coulson's wound.
Aaaah!!
Coulson nearly jumped from the pain.
"Virus or not—everything's sterilized now."
Yang Jian said calmly. "But this world really is beyond saving."
Melinda gripped her dagger tightly: "Then what do we do now?"
"Come with us to a parallel universe." Wanda said firmly.
Echo nodded in agreement: "At least you'll survive."
Deadpool suddenly pulled out a small notebook from behind him.
"Wait! Cross-universe immigration requires a form! Name? Gender? Any prohibited items? Like zombie virus or something!"
Yang Jian waved open a portal.
Then he grabbed Deadpool by the collar and tossed him through.
"Let's go."
Just before stepping into the portal, Melinda took one last look back at the devastated world.
Coulson patted her shoulder. The two supported each other and stepped into the golden light.
Cross-Universe Reunion
The golden portal slowly dissipated on a New York street. Deadpool was the first to bounce out, looking around like an excited child.
"Whoa! Which universe is this? Let me see if there are any spandex heroes!"
He spun in a circle: "Ha! Spider-Man graffiti! Looks like New York alright!"
Wanda, Echo, and Melinda May stepped out next, warily scanning the unfamiliar world.
People walked busily on the streets. Tall buildings gleamed in the sunlight—a stark contrast to their ruined universe.
At that moment, a white figure on a rooftop across the street froze. Spider-Gwen was crouched on a billboard, eyes wide behind her mask.
"Yang?!"
She executed a graceful flip and landed in front of the group, quickly removing her mask to reveal beautiful blonde hair.
Before anyone could react, Gwen threw herself into Yang Jian's arms and gave him a passionate kiss.
"Whoa! Live broadcast!"
Deadpool hooted from the side, pretending to film with his phone.
"This is going viral on Twitter! Cross-universe couple, Spider kiss!"
Wanda and Echo awkwardly looked away. Melinda raised an eyebrow. Coulson clutched his wounded abdomen and muttered quietly.
"Young people these days…"
Gwen kissed him for a long moment before pulling back, gazing at Yang Jian with affection.
"Where have you been these past few days?"
"I'm here now, aren't I?" Yang Jian smiled and pinched her cheek.
Only then did Gwen notice the others. She blinked curiously: "Who are they?"
"I'm Deadpool! You can call me Wade!"
Deadpool immediately stepped forward and gave an exaggerated bow.
"The sexiest mercenary in history, fourth-wall-breaking expert, zombie slayer, and…"
Gwen rolled her eyes and ignored him completely, looking at Yang Jian.
"They're from another universe," Yang Jian explained.
"A zombie virus broke out there. These are the last survivors—and conveniently, your universe doesn't have their counterparts."
"Zombie virus?!"
Gwen blinked in surprise: "That's terrifying!"
Coulson forced himself to stand straight and politely extended a hand.
"Phil Coulson, former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. This is my colleague Melinda May, this is Wanda Maximoff, and this is Echo."
Gwen looked a bit dazed: "You're right, Yang—our world really doesn't have S.H.I.E.L.D."
She suddenly thought of something: "Wait—do you need medical help? I know a great doctor!"
Deadpool cut in again: "Is it that Kraven Palmer guy? I heard he—"
Shoo!
A heat vision beam grazed past his mask.
"Okay okay, I'll shut up."
Deadpool mimed zipping his mouth, but moments later leaned toward Gwen again.
"So what's Deadpool like in your universe? As handsome as me?"
Gwen helplessly looked at Yang Jian: "Is he always like this?"
"Worse." Wanda and Echo said in unison.
Yang Jian wrapped an arm around Gwen's shoulder: "First, let's find them a place to settle."
