Chapter 33 - Balls Down

They reached the field as the lights flickered on.

Not empty this time.

A few players scattered across the grass.

But near the benches—

a small cluster.

Diego sat forward, elbows on his knees.

Controller in hand.

Screen balanced on a bag in front of him.

Daniel stood behind him.

Marcus beside him.

Both watching.

"—left, left—"

"I see him."

"Behind—"

"I said I see him."

On the screen—

movement.

Fast.

Tight corridors.

Sharp turns.

A figure appeared—

Diego flicked—

shot—

hit.

"Nice."

"Took you long enough."

Diego didn't respond.

Eyes locked.

Another angle.

Another target.

Miss.

Adjust.

Hit.

No wasted motion.

Not perfect.

But controlled.

Li Shen slowed slightly as he approached.

Watched.

Movement… without movement.

No body.

No weight.

No balance.

Just—

input.

He stepped closer.

"What's that?"

Claire glanced at the screen.

"A video game."

"A… video… game."

He repeated it like it needed testing.

Diego flicked again.

Another hit.

"Shooter," Claire added. "You shoot people. Don't overthink it."

"I wasn't."

Pause.

Li Shen crouched slightly.

Closer now.

The screen reflected in his eyes.

Crosshair.

Movement.

Angles.

Timing.

He turns—then shoots.

Not before.

Not after.

Another target appeared.

Diego pre-aimed slightly—

waited—

then fired the moment the model stepped into view.

Hit.

Li Shen's gaze narrowed slightly.

Same.

Daniel noticed him.

"You play?"

"No."

Marcus glanced over.

"…you've never played?"

"No."

Diego finally spoke.

Still looking at the screen.

"Then don't touch it."

Claire snorted.

"He'll break it."

Li Shen tilted his head slightly.

"…can I try?"

That got a reaction.

Diego paused the game.

Looked up.

"You've never played."

"No."

"And you want to try."

"Yes."

A short silence.

Then Diego leaned back slightly.

Held the controller out.

"Fine."

He smirked faintly.

"Don't complain when you get destroyed."

Li Shen took it.

Light.

Compact.

Too many inputs.

He sat down.

Screen in front of him.

Unfamiliar.

But clear.

"Move with this," Diego said, pointing. "Look with that. Shoot here."

Li Shen nodded once.

The game resumed.

Immediately—

movement.

Too fast.

The screen jerked.

Overcorrected.

Missed everything.

"…what are you doing?" Daniel said.

Li Shen didn't answer.

Too sensitive.

He slowed his movement.

Still off.

Target appeared—

he shot—

missed.

Late.

Another appeared—

he shot—

too early.

Miss.

Claire leaned slightly.

"…yeah, this is about what I expected."

Li Shen adjusted again.

Smaller movements.

Less force.

The camera steadied.

Not smooth.

But usable.

A target crossed the screen—

He didn't shoot.

Waited.

The target moved into the center—

He fired.

Hit.

A small pause.

Diego's eyes flicked once.

"…lucky."

Li Shen didn't react.

Another target.

He aimed early this time.

Slightly ahead.

Waited—

Then shot.

Hit.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Wait."

Daniel frowned slightly.

"He's not flicking."

Diego watched properly now.

Another engagement.

Li Shen moved less.

Didn't chase.

Held position.

Target entered—

Shot.

Hit.

Claire blinked.

"…what."

Li Shen's expression didn't change.

Same.

Too early—miss.

Too late—miss.

Here works.

Another kill.

Not fast.

Not flashy.

Just—

clean.

Diego leaned forward again.

Eyes sharper now.

"…how are you doing that?"

Li Shen paused the game.

Set the controller down.

"It's just timing."

Silence.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked at Diego.

Claire stared at Li Shen.

"…you've never played before."

"No."

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

"…you're annoying."

"Probably."

Li Shen stood up.

Looked at the screen once more.

Then—

past it.

The field.

Players moving.

Ball rolling.

Voices rising.

Same structure.

Different form.

This works here too.

He turned slightly.

"Are you done?" Claire asked.

"Yes."

"That's it?"

"Yes."

She stared at him again.

"…you're actually impossible."

Li Shen didn't answer.

He stepped onto the field

"Balls down."

Coach Ramirez's voice cut clean across the field.

No clap this time.

No casual tone.

They gathered.

Loose line. Uneven spacing.

Same people.

Different feeling.

"We have a match tomorrow," he said.

No build-up.

No explanation.

"School organized. Against another school."

A few glances shifted.

Small movements.

Nothing loud.

"So today—"

A pause.

"—we play properly."

Silence held for a second longer than usual.

Coach looked across them.

One by one.

"Marcus. Center back."

Marcus nodded once.

"Diego. Wide."

Diego rolled his shoulders, already half-smiling.

"Ethan. Forward."

Ethan didn't react. Just looked ahead.

"Daniel. Central."

Daniel adjusted his stance slightly. Ready.

Then—

"Li Shen."

A brief pause.

"Midfield."

Coach's eyes stayed on him a fraction longer.

"You'll move more than the others."

Li Shen looked back at him.

No reaction.

Just—

processing.

"Positions don't mean much if you ignore them," Coach added. "Tomorrow, they will."

A beat.

"Play."

No whistle.

They just… started.

Claire sat on the bench behind them.

Arms folded.

Watching.

The ball moved.

First touch—Daniel.

Simple.

To Marcus.

Back.

Across.

Clean.

Li Shen stepped into space.

Received.

Open.

He moved.

Acceleration—

Too much.

Second touch pushed too far.

A defender stepped in.

Ball gone.

No one said anything.

Play flipped instantly.

Li Shen slowed.

Too fast.

Ball came back again.

This time—

he passed immediately.

Safe.

Too safe.

The ball reached Diego.

Diego stopped.

Looked up.

Nothing ahead.

Play stalled.

"Move," Diego muttered.

Li Shen didn't.

The ball went backward.

Reset.

Too early.

Next sequence.

Marcus intercepted cleanly.

Passed forward.

Daniel again.

Daniel didn't rush.

Didn't force it.

Waited.

Then slipped a short pass between two players.

Ethan moved.

Not fast—

just at the right time.

Received.

Turned.

Shot.

Wide.

But close.

No one reacted.

Just reset.

Li Shen watched.

He didn't run faster.

He ran… later.

The ball returned.

Li Shen positioned himself.

Received again.

This time—

he held it.

Half a second.

Too long.

Pressure closed.

He shifted—

lost angle.

Tackle.

Ball gone.

"…again," Coach said from the side.

Not loud.

Not harsh.

Just—

there.

Play resumed.

Daniel passed.

Marcus held.

Diego moved wide.

Ethan stayed central.

Structure.

Li Shen moved through it.

But not with it.

Every time he touched the ball—

something broke.

Too sharp.

Too early.

Too off.

He slowed.

Watched more.

Less movement.

Ball came again.

He didn't attack it.

Let it come to him.

First touch—

clean.

He looked up.

Diego wide.

Ethan central.

Daniel behind.

Options.

For a moment—

everything lined up.

Then—

he moved.

Not full speed.

Just a short burst.

Enough to shift the defender.

A small angle opened.

He passed.

Simple.

Flat.

Diego received it cleanly this time.

Kept moving.

Play continued.

No one stopped.

No one complained.

It worked.

Li Shen stood still for a moment after.

…that was different.

Behind him—

Coach's voice again.

"Again."

No praise.

No correction.

Just repetition.

The game kept going.

Not smoother.

Not perfect.

But slightly—

less broken.

Sun lowering.

Shadows stretching across the field.

Players slowed.

Breathing heavier.

Li Shen wasn't.

But something else felt… off.

Not physical.

Working…

He glanced at the others.

Marcus holding position.

Daniel adjusting angles.

Ethan waiting.

Diego moving wide again.

All of it connected.

Not naturally.

But intentionally.

…within this.

The thought lingered.

Unfinished.

"Tomorrow," Coach said as play finally stopped, "this won't be enough."

No one replied.

They didn't need to.

Everyone felt it.

Li Shen looked back at the field.

Same grass.

Same space.

Different weight.

"…interesting," he said quietly.

This time—

it wasn't casual.

It meant something.
