Isla's POV
The message was still on the wall when Isla walked into the room.
Mira had been right about what it was written in. Isla took one look and turned away, pressing the back of her hand to her mouth, because she was a healer and she knew blood when she saw it and the amount used to write those words on the stone wall was not a small thing.
The child must not be born.
Cassian stood in the center of the room for a long time without speaking. Ezra was behind him cataloguing everything with quiet efficiency, checking the window, the door hinges, the unconscious guard who had been moved to the corridor and was breathing but would not wake. Kaia stood beside Isla with her shoulder pressed against hers, which was the closest Kaia got to saying she was frightened.
"She was never Damien's ally," Cassian said finally. "She came with him because it was the fastest way inside these walls."
"Then Damien did not send her," Isla said.
