She left before sunrise.
Kaden was still sleeping when Maya slipped out of his arms and quietly gathered her clothes. She didn't let herself look at him. If she looked at his face, at the way he trusted her even in sleep, she would break.
Love was a weapon. She had learned that a long time ago.
Love was what made her raise Derek alone. Love was what made her sacrifice her dreams. Love was what made her weak enough to be betrayed.
And now love was going to get everyone in this kingdom killed.
The Territory War started in less than two weeks. They had soldiers to train. Supplies to organize. Strategies to perfect. They didn't have time for whatever was happening between her and Kaden.
They didn't have time for her falling apart.
She spent the next three days buried in work. Defense blueprints. Supply calculations. Combat scenarios. She spoke to Kaden only about strategy. Nothing else. No eye contact. No lingering. Just cold, professional efficiency.
