Chapter 23 - Chapter 23. Shadow of umber

Morning arrived quietly over the road leaving Windfall City.

The sky was clear, something rare for a place ruled by storms.

Elior walked along the stone path that curved through the hills beyond the city. The Tempest Badge rested safely inside his badge case. With it, his journey had moved forward—but it also felt different now.

He could feel it.

Something had changed.

Infernyx walked beside him, its wings of flame glowing softly in the morning light. The flames were calm now, moving like a steady heartbeat rather than a raging fire.

Behind them, Lunashade moved silently, almost blending with the shadows cast by the tall grass along the road.

Elior stopped for a moment.

He reached for a Pokéball at his belt.

"Voltiger," he said softly.

The Pokéball opened in a flash of light.

Voltiger appeared.

The electric Pokémon stretched slightly, sparks jumping across its fur as it adjusted to the open air again.

"Feeling better?" Elior asked.

Voltiger let out a short, energetic cry.

It looked stronger than before, though faint sparks still flickered around its body from time to time.

Infernyx glanced toward it, flames flickering briefly in greeting.

Lunashade watched silently, its silver eyes calm.

For a moment, the three Pokémon stood together again.

Flame.

Shadow.

Lightning.

Elior smiled.

"Good. We're all back together."

But far away—

They were not alone.

On a rocky ridge overlooking the road, two figures watched from the shadows.

Both wore dark cloaks marked with a faint symbol—an abstract black spiral.

The mark of Team Umber.

One of them lowered a pair of binoculars.

"So that's him," the first figure said.

"The Resonance trainer."

The second figure studied Elior carefully.

"Three Pokémon," they said.

"Flame… shadow… and lightning."

Their voice lowered slightly.

"The reports were accurate."

The first figure tapped a small communication device.

"Target confirmed," they said.

"Location: Route beyond Windfall City."

A faint voice responded through the device.

"Observe only."

"No engagement."

The agent frowned slightly.

"Understood."

Back on the road, Voltiger suddenly stopped walking.

Sparks crackled around its body.

Elior noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Voltiger looked toward the hills.

Toward the exact ridge where the two cloaked figures stood.

Its electricity flickered uneasily.

Lunashade's shadow stretched along the ground.

Infernyx's flames rose slightly.

All three had sensed it.

Elior narrowed his eyes.

"…Someone's watching us."

On the ridge, the two cloaked agents stepped back into the shadows.

The first agent spoke quietly.

"He sensed us."

The second nodded.

"Interesting."

They turned away from the cliff.

"Inform the commander."

"The Resonance subject is more aware than expected."

Below them, Elior remained still for a moment longer.

The wind moved gently across the hills.

Nothing looked unusual.

But he trusted his instincts.

"Stay alert," he said to his partners.

Infernyx's flames burned brighter.

Voltiger's sparks danced along the ground.

Lunashade's silver eyes glowed faintly.

Far away—

Inside a hidden underground chamber—

More members of Team Umber watched through glowing screens.

One figure sat above the others.

Silent.

Observing.

"…So," the figure finally said.

"The Resonance user has begun moving."

The room grew quiet.

Then the figure gave the order.

"Begin Phase One."

And far away on the road—

Elior's journey continued.

Unaware that the shadows behind him had already begun to close.

And the journey continues
