Chapter 38 - Chapter 14 — The Last Seal

he bunker had fallen silent.

For the first time since the Gate awakened, there were no alarms.

No tremors.

No voices.

Only the faint hum of the Covenant Blade.

Dean stood before the Seventh Chain.

The crimson crack running through its center pulsed slowly.

Like a heartbeat.

Kaelor approached cautiously.

His ancient eyes studied every rune carved into the chain.

After a long silence, he spoke.

"It's dying."

Ben frowned.

"It's a chain."

"No."

Kaelor gently placed a hand on the cold metal.

"It's alive."

Dean exchanged a glance with Asterion.

"Alive?"

Asterion nodded.

"The Seven Chains were never forged."

He looked at the Keeper.

"They were created from seven vows."

Dean raised an eyebrow.

"Vows?"

Malach stepped beside him.

"Each Keeper sacrificed a part of themselves to create a seal."

He paused.

"Their courage."

"Their hope."

"Their memories."

"Their names."

"Their future."

"Their life."

Dean looked back at the Seventh Chain.

"...And the last one?"

The room fell silent.

Kaelor answered quietly.

"Love."

Ben blinked.

"...That's... unexpected."

Kaelor nodded.

"Love is the strongest promise ever made."

Dean thought about his family.

John.

Sam.

His Uncle Dean.

Bobby.

Ben.

The people who had shaped him.

Then he remembered the words from his trial.

Family doesn't end in blood.

The Covenant Blade glowed brighter.

Almost as if it had heard the thought.

Suddenly—

Every light in the bunker went out.

Not broken.

Extinguished.

A freezing wind rushed through the chamber.

The Seventh Chain began to tremble.

A crimson mist seeped from the crack.

Dean instinctively drew the Covenant Blade.

Blue flames ignited along its edge.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Dean..."

He froze.

That voice...

Impossible.

"...Dad?"

Ben looked at him.

"What?"

Dean slowly turned toward the corridor.

Standing there...

Bathed in darkness...

Was Sam Winchester.

Exactly as Dean remembered him from old photographs.

Leather jacket.

Gentle eyes.

A tired smile.

Dean's heart pounded.

"Dad..."

Sam smiled warmly.

"You've grown."

Ben stared.

"...Dean..."

He whispered.

"...that's not him."

Malach's expression hardened.

"Don't move."

But Dean couldn't.

He had spent his entire life wondering what he would say if he ever met his father again.

Now...

He stood only a few feet away.

Sam slowly extended his hand.

"Come here."

Dean took a step forward.

The Covenant Blade dimmed.

Asterion shouted.

"KEEPER!"

Dean hesitated.

Something felt wrong.

Sam smiled again.

"You don't need the Blade anymore."

Another step.

The crimson crack across the Seventh Chain widened.

Ben suddenly ran forward.

Without hesitation—

He tackled Dean to the ground.

At that exact instant—

The illusion shattered.

Sam's face twisted into darkness.

His eyes became crimson.

His smile became monstrous.

The Nameless.

Its laughter echoed throughout the bunker.

"Excellent..."

Its form dissolved back into shadow.

Dean stared in horror.

Ben stood over him, breathing heavily.

"You really thought your dad would tell you to drop the magic sword?"

Dean blinked.

Then laughed despite himself.

"...Yeah..."

He stood up and dusted off his jacket.

"...that was pretty dumb."

Ben smirked.

"You're buying the burgers next time."

The laughter stopped.

The Nameless appeared above the Gate once more.

Its crimson eyes burned brighter than ever.

"Compassion..."

It looked directly at Ben.

"...is humanity's greatest weakness."

Dean stepped in front of his friend.

The Covenant Blade blazed like a star.

"No."

His voice echoed across the chamber.

"...It's our greatest strength."

Blue light erupted from the Blade.

The Seventh Chain answered.

Its runes flared to life once more.

The crimson crack stopped spreading.

For the first time...

The Nameless took a step backward.

It had underestimated them.

Not because of Dean.

Not because of the Blade.

But because a Winchester had never stood alone.

The Gate trembled.

The battle was not over.

But hope...

Had returned.
