Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Frontlines III

[Screech! The sound of iron cables grinding against a metal rim]

A man stood atop the wall of the third sector directly above the main gate, he collected a binocular from a soldier beside him.

His had short brown hair, an a brown moustache to suit.

His buttons looked like they were about to burst from his oversized stomach.

It was Curth.

He gazed at the massacre through the binoculars.

His eye caught on to something.

"Huh?

Them little boys, what in the hell.

They actually got free??" Leo shaking off his cuffs came as a shock to Curth.

It would take anyone else by surprise too.

A hawk landed on Curth's shoulder.

There was a paper attached to the bottom of its feet.

"Oh, ya' here to give me this I suppose." He grabbed the paper, from beneath its feet.

[Screech!! The mechanical noises intensified.]

Then gently, he untied the red rope that came with the paper.

"Red rope...

So it came from the bottom huh." His eyes widened as he read the contents of the paper.

He smiled.

[Thud! The mechanical sounds had stopped]

Now at the top of the wall, the wooden elevators had fulfilled their purpose.

They came mounted with cannons and barrels filled with ammunition, two soldiers came in each elevator.

From the one end of the wall to the other, the wall was now fortified with canons.

"You're Curth right?" A female's voice said.

Curth frowned, he was angered by the undermining of his status.

"That's Corporal Curth to ya-" He turned around and froze.

She tilted her head a little, with a straight look on her face.

"That badge!

She's a Commander" He gulped, then saluted as he looked at her slender figure.

She wasn't taller than he was, neither did she look older in fact she looked to be in her forty's at most.

Black hair that flowed with the wind.

As well as black pupils that had no business reflecting light.

A slender jawline with two marks on the right cheek; she was birthed from royalty.

Everything about her said class.

She took a step forward to the extreme edge of the wall, now standing beside the man.

With a simple gaze she turned to the man, she didn't seem concerned with his previous comment.

She raised her hand, with a clenched fist.

"Who's she orderin'-" As Curth looked behind he saw two soldiers unsheathing their blades.

They Sheated the blades and stepped back at the woman's command.

"I'll be the one taking command of these troops, now if you'll be so kind as to pass me those." The woman motioned to the binoculars he held.

[Gulp] He handed it to her without any hesitation.

She was in possession of two long poles, with flags of different colours.

As she raised the white flag upright in the air, all the troops loaded the cannons with explosive shells.

They kept the cannons upright, they used the white flag as feedback for controlling the cannons.

She tilted the flag down as she did so did the troops tilt the cannons.

The ones at the farther distances who could not see the flag just did as their closest comrades did.

Now holding a binoculars on her left, and the flag on her right she watched upon the scene.

It was a one sided slaughter by the critters.

"Using prisoners as bait irrespective to the crimes they committed.

A bread thief left to die with a serial killer.

One who just started serving their time and one who is about to finish.

The blood from this cruelty is on our hands.

One day we shall attone for this sin." The gravity of the events burdened her mind.

"Wait what?!" What she saw startled her, she dropped the flag.

"What did you say your name was?" Her arms were now grabbing the collar of Curth's neck.

"C-cur-"He stammered as she shushed him.

"Hold it, I don't want to hear it.

What were your orders?!" She grit her teeth, her look was that of annoyance as was her tone.

"Use prisoners to stall for time ma'am" Curth showed subservience.

"Good!

Then why are they kids down there!" She saw the scene of them jumping from their horse.

You better explain properly if you don't want to die." She pointed over to the distance.

With one swift motion she threw Curth to the ground.

Two swords were placed on the throat of Curth.

It was from her personal guards.

-

Back at he bottom of the wall.

The main gate was opened, one horse trots through the gate.

On it was seated a man with Golden armour, holding an enormous axe nearly 1.5 metres in length on his right hand.

Even his horse was plated with golden armour, with a great shield strapped to its left side.

On his breast plate were the initials 'Heaven on earth'.

The steps from the horse was rythimic, his presence domineering.

Now nearly 80 metres from the wall, 12 horses crossed the gate, plated in siver armour with the riders armed with swords and shields - These were the Commanders.

Trotting similarly but faster than the man that preceded them.

After passing the gate, they split into two;

Six diagonally to the lead horse's right and another six to the left.

After catching up to the lead horse they moved on one line as it.

Another set of soldiers on horseback passed through the gate, the horses not as amoured as the others but they numbered close to three thousand.

It took a while for them to march through the gate due to their sheer magnitude.

As they trotted out they spread apart to multiple lines.

About five hundred were mounted with giant shields, those moved through the centre behind the lead horse.

Then they spread out in a straight row behind the lead horse.

Another five hundred were with spears, they filed behind the Shield bearers.

Then behind them were the thousand archers, then the soldiers who welded swords and shields.

After they had completely assimilated with the formation, they joined the trot of the commanding horses.

A space was left in the centre of the formation behind the Golden horse.

Then next came the artillery, a giant catapult on wheels was been rolled by two men each, and beside those were wagons with barrels of ammunition and gunpowder.

They numbered 20 catapults and 20 wagons.

The artillery moved through the centre of the formation.

The march continued.

-

Back on the top of the wall, Curth was still on the floor.

"So you're telling me, those kids are criminals who killed an aristocrat and her guard with a gun they stole from her guard's hands." She looked at him with doubtful eyes.

"Did she buy it?

That was a close call" The goosebumps on Curth's skin calmed.

"Let him go" She told her gaurds.

They receded their blades.

Curth let out a sigh.

The woman gave a slight nod.

"That was scary ya' kno-" Curth's body fell flat in the floor.

[He couldn't hear a thing]

His vision blurred out, then shortly faded.

"Take him to the bottom of the wall and tie him up.

He'll speak the truth when tortured." She said authoritatively.

"Yes ma!" They answered in unison.

They grabbed him by his hand, rose his body up and made for the elevator.

She looked through the binoculars again, this time Leo was already running with Marcus's body.

The critters were right behind them, they were far behind at first but Leo's pace dropped gradually.

"What a sight.

This is going to be a pain" She thought to herself.

Looking through the binoculars, she was now calculating for the speed of the horde as well as that of that of the boy.

She picked up the pole with the red flag.

-

The march was now more than half a kilometre away from the wall.

"Lana should be getting ready at the top of the wall now." The man in the golden armour thought.

"Hmm?

Am I seeing things?" He removed his golden helmet to confirm his eyes.

His face was revealed;

He looked to be in his sixties, his eyes were black and almost droopy.

A bald head and full white beards on his squarish face.

His eyes didn't seem to be lying, he saw the boy running from the critters in the distance, they were getting closer to him.

"HALT!" The man's voice sounded like thunder as it reverberated through the surroundings.

The entire formation stopped their advance.

One of the commander horses left formation and approached the man.

"Yes fa-

I mean Supreme Heimer" The commander named ren replied.

"You're out of this battle, go ahead alone.

Rescue those kids and retreat." Heimer said to Ren calmly.

Ren nodded looked to the distance.

-

Over at the distance.

Leo was still running with Marcus in his arms, he had vastly slowed down.

The only reason he hadn't been chewed on was his headstart on the critters.

-

Back On the wall Lana lowered the red flag to below 1⁰.

"FIRE!!" She screamed.
