"Wait, Sophie. Why have you been giving me that look?" Lucien asked as he caught up to her and gently grabbed her wrist, stopping her from walking away. He instinctively glanced around the corridor before lowering his voice.
Sophie slowly turned to face him, her eyes filled with disappointment.
"Why wouldn't I give you that look?" she asked bitterly. "Over and over again you've told me to leave Arabella in the king's care because he would protect her. Yet every single time something terrible happens to her. First she was poisoned, then she was kidnapped, and now..." Her voice trembled as she struggled to continue. "How many more times must Bella suffer before you admit the king has done an awful job protecting her?"
Lucien remained silent for a moment before letting out a sigh.
