Chapter 13 - The Vote

The attack didn't come at night.

It came in the morning.

Public.

Clean.

Legal.

Which made it far more dangerous.

Adrian was already dressed when Elara stepped into the dining room. Dark suit. Steel expression. Phone pressed to his ear.

"Call an emergency session," he said calmly. "All members present."

He ended the call and looked at her.

"They've triggered a board vote."

Her stomach dropped. "For what?"

"To remove me as acting CEO."

The words felt unreal.

"On what grounds?"

He gave a cold half-smile.

"Instability."

Her chest tightened.

"Elijah," she whispered.

"Yes."

Vale Enterprises – Executive Boardroom

The room felt colder than usual.

Long polished table.

Floor-to-ceiling glass.

Seven board members seated.

Elijah Vale sat at the far end.

Relaxed.

Composed.

Silver hair perfectly in place.

As if he hadn't orchestrated everything.

Elara wasn't supposed to be there.

But Adrian insisted.

"She stays," he said flatly when one member objected.

Elijah's eyes flicked to her.

Amused.

"Of course," he murmured. "The muse."

Adrian didn't react.

But Elara felt the insult.

A senior board member cleared his throat.

"This emergency session has been called due to concerns regarding leadership volatility following recent… events."

Volatility.

Meaning:

The scandal.

The accident.

The rumors.

Her.

Elijah folded his hands.

"Adrian has been distracted," he said smoothly. "Emotionally compromised."

Elara felt heat rise in her chest.

"You're basing this on gossip," Adrian replied evenly.

Elijah tilted his head slightly.

"Are we?"

He pressed a remote.

The screen behind him lit up.

News headlines.

Speculation about Adrian's "obsession" with the woman blamed for his mother's death.

Photos of Elara entering and leaving the building.

Anonymous insider quotes questioning his judgment.

Her breath caught.

"He released this," she whispered.

Adrian's jaw tightened, but he stayed silent.

Elijah continued calmly.

"Our shareholders are nervous. Our partners uncertain. Stability is essential."

"And your solution?" Adrian asked coldly.

"A temporary transfer of executive authority."

Silence.

"To you," Adrian finished.

Elijah didn't deny it.

The room felt suffocating.

This wasn't about grief.

It wasn't about justice.

It was about control.

Elara watched the board members carefully.

Two avoided eye contact.

One looked uncomfortable.

Three looked persuaded.

Elijah had been working behind the scenes.

For weeks.

Then—

Elijah turned slightly toward Elara.

"This all began," he said softly, "when you chose to involve yourself in matters beyond your understanding."

Her heart pounded.

"Say what you mean," she replied.

A few board members shifted uncomfortably.

He smiled faintly.

"You are a liability."

The word hit hard.

Adrian's voice dropped dangerously low.

"She is not part of this vote."

"She is the reason for it," Elijah countered smoothly.

The tension in the room became electric.

Elara realized something chilling.

This wasn't just about removing Adrian.

It was about isolating him.

Making him choose.

Power.

Or her.

Elijah leaned back.

"Step down voluntarily," he said softly. "Protect your legacy. Protect the company."

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"No."

A pause.

Then Elijah nodded once.

"Very well."

He turned to the board.

"All in favor of initiating a leadership transfer?"

Hands began to rise.

One.

Two.

Three.

Elara's pulse thundered.

Four.

That was majority.

Adrian's empire — slipping.

Until—

A voice spoke from the far end.

"Before we vote officially," one of the older board members said slowly, "I'd like clarification."

Elijah's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What clarification?"

"The offshore transfers," the man continued. "The ones routed through Ardent Holdings last quarter."

The room shifted.

Elijah's calm faltered — just slightly.

"What about them?" he asked smoothly.

"They were unauthorized."

Silence.

Adrian didn't move.

But Elara saw it.

He knew.

He'd been waiting.

The board member continued.

"Funds were redirected days before Evelyn's death."

Now everyone was listening.

"And those funds," the man added, "would only be accessible if leadership changed."

The implication hung in the air.

Elijah's gaze hardened.

"This is a distraction."

"No," Adrian said quietly.

"This," he continued, eyes locked on his uncle, "is motive."

The room exploded into overlapping voices.

Shock.

Anger.

Confusion.

Elijah stood slowly.

"You think you can prove anything?" he asked softly.

Adrian rose too.

"I don't need to."

Their standoff felt historic.

Personal.

Deadly without weapons.

"You moved too soon," Adrian added quietly.

Elijah's expression turned cold.

"This isn't over," he said.

"No," Adrian agreed. "It isn't."

The vote was suspended.

Not won.

Not lost.

Just… delayed.

But Elijah had exposed himself.

And now the board was watching him too.

Outside the boardroom, Elara exhaled shakily.

"He almost took everything," she said.

Adrian looked at her.

"He still might."

She hesitated.

"You could have distanced yourself from me," she said quietly.

His gaze sharpened.

"That's what he wanted."

"And?"

"And I don't respond to manipulation."

There was something else in his tone now.

Not just defiance.

Choice.

He chose not to sacrifice her.

And Elijah noticed.

Which meant—

The next move wouldn't be corporate.

It would be personal.
