Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Weight of Gold

The Hierarchy Shop was not a building; it was an architectural impossibility—a cathedral of floating obsidian shelves that stretched into a void where the ceiling should have been. In the Afterveil, your physical reach was limited by your Standing.

Arthur walked past a group of Tier-1 souls huddled near the entrance. They were scavenging for basic "Essence Scraps" to heal wounds from their latest trials. As Arthur approached, the air in front of him shimmered.

A pulse of golden light radiated from the floor beneath his boots.

[AUTHORITY DETECTED: TRIAL 33 GLOBAL RANK #1]

[ACCESS LEVEL: SOVEREIGN (TEMPORARY)]

The crowded aisle of souls parted instinctively. In the Afterveil, Ranker Authority wasn't just a social status; it was a physical force. High-rankers emitted a "Pressure" that forced lower-ranked souls to lower their gaze. It was the world's way of ensuring that those who conquered their past were respected by those still drowning in it.

"Look at the floor," a young woman whispered, pulling her comrade back. "Golden ripples. He's a Peak-Ranker."

Arthur ignored the stares. He was focused on the system interface blooming in his peripheral vision.

HIERARCHY BENEFITS UNLOCKED (TIER 1 & 2):

Market Discount: 40% (Ranker Bonus)

Priority Browsing: Items below Tier 3 will manifest instantly.

Non-Aggression Zone: No soul below Rank 100 may initiate combat with you in the Nexus.

Good, Arthur thought, his businessman's mind already calculating the margins. The more I dominate the trials, the cheaper survival becomes. It's a 'the rich get richer' ecosystem.

He reached a section of the shop guarded by two headless statues carved from white marble. As he stepped through, the commoners were blocked by an invisible wall. This was the Sovereign Wing, reserved only for those who held a #1 spot on any leaderboard.

The air here was thick with the scent of ozone and ancient power. Standing before a pedestal was a woman with hair like spun moonlight and eyes the color of a winter sea.

Lirael Voss.

She didn't look like the other souls in the plaza. She didn't look desperate. She looked... bored. In her hand, she balanced a spear that seemed to be made of frozen lightning.

She turned as Arthur approached, her eyes scanning him from his boots to his sharp, rejuvenated jawline. She didn't flinch at his Ranker Pressure; she absorbed it.

"So," she said, her voice a melodic rasp. "The 'Joker' who broke the world record. You look a bit old to be a speed-runner, Arthur Wu."

"I've had seventy-six years of practice at being efficient," Arthur replied, stopping a respectful distance away. "I don't believe in wasting time. Or breath."

Lirael tilted her head, a faint, intrigued smile playing on her lips. "Seventy-six? Most people who live that long arrive here with souls like dry husks. They settle for Bronze-tier safety and pray for a quick reincarnation. But you... you have the SSS-Rank glow of a conqueror."

She stepped closer, her silver armor clinking softly. "Do you know what that Rank #1 truly gives you, Arthur? It's not just the discounts or the fancy titles."

She pointed to the massive leaderboard visible through the shop's transparent walls.

"The Afterveil is a hierarchy of Karmic Gravity. Because you are #1 for Trial 33, you now own the 'Rights' to that year's essence. Every soul that fails Trial 33 from now on... a small fraction of their lost energy flows to you."

Arthur paused. "Passive income. In the afterlife?"

"Call it what you want," Lirael shrugged. "But it means the 'Ten Legends' who rule the final scales aren't just strong because they passed the trials. They are strong because they own the gravity of the entire world. By taking that spot, you didn't just beat a record. You stole a piece of the pie from the people at the top."

Arthur looked at the high-tier items manifesting on the shelves—Soul-Forged Blades, Elixirs of True Youth, and Manuals of the Ancient Breath.

"Then I suppose I should spend this 'gravity' quickly," Arthur said, turning back to the shelves. "Before the previous owners come to take it back."

"Vex is already throwing a tantrum in the Plaza," Lirael warned, turning to leave. "But he's a child. Watch out for the ones who don't scream. The ones who see your 76 years as a threat to their eternal reign."

As she walked away, Arthur's system chimed.

[NEW QUEST DETECTED: THE SOVEREIGN'S FIRST TRADE]

Objective: Purchase a Tier-2 Soul Artifact.

Current Wealth: 50,000 Karmic Credits (Rank #1 Bonus).

Arthur's eyes landed on a ring made of dark, swirling jade.

[ITEM: JADE HARMONY RING]

[EFFECT: Conceals Ranker Aura. Allows the Host to appear as a 'Common Soul' to those with lower Insight.]

"Perfect," Arthur whispered. "The best way to deal with a shark is to make him think you're just a minnow
