Chapter 6: The Council of the Void

While Arthur was busy automating his soul's economy, the shockwaves of his 12-second victory had finally reached the upper echelons of the Afterveil.

High above the Nexus Plaza, in a dimension where the air was made of pure, distilled karma, stood the Observatory of the Ten. This was not a place of stone and mortar, but a cathedral of frozen time.

Ten thrones sat in a circle, though only four were occupied. These were the Legends—souls who had conquered all 76 Scales and chose to remain as the architects of the afterlife rather than move on to whatever lay beyond.

"A glitch? Or a deliberate intrusion?"

The voice belonged to Elder Kaelos, a man who looked like he was made of starlight. He sat on the First Throne, his eyes fixed on a shimmering holographic thread that represented Trial 33.

"It's a Geron-soul," a woman's voice replied, sharp as a winter frost. This was The Weaver, a Legend who controlled the "Gravity" of the 50s. "An old man named Arthur Wu. He died at seventy-six. By all laws of the Audit, he should have been erased in the 40s. His soul was too diluted, too weary."

"And yet," Kaelos murmured, "he didn't just pass the 33rd Scale. He shattered the record held by Vex. And he did it with a System that we did not authorize."

A heavy silence fell over the chamber. In the Afterveil, "Systems" were rare blessings, usually granted by the Legends themselves to maintain the balance. Arthur's Karmic Apex was an anomaly—a rogue variable in their perfect monopoly.

"He is siphoning gravity," The Weaver noted, her fingers dancing over a spectral abacus. "He bought a Ledger. He's already automating his essence yield. He isn't fighting like a warrior; he's playing the Scales like a market. If he reaches the 40th Scale with this much momentum, he might actually trigger a Sovereign Collapse."

"Let the boy Vex handle it," Kaelos suggested, his voice cold. "Tell him that if he 'corrects' this anomaly, we will grant him early access to the Tier-3 armory."

"Vex is a blunt instrument," The Weaver countered. "This Arthur Wu... he has the eyes of a man who has outlived empires. He won't be moved by a sword. He needs to be reminded of why he's here."

Back in the Nexus, Arthur was oblivious to the gods debating his existence. He stood before the gate of Trial 35 (Age 41).

His new Steward's Account was humming in his mind, a steady stream of notifications ticking like a clock.

"Lirael," Arthur said, not turning around as the silver-haired general approached him at the gate. "Why are you following me? Don't you have your own trials to run?"

Lirael stopped, her spear tip tracing a line in the glowing dust of the Plaza. "I'm Rank #4 on the 35th Scale. It's a combat trial—a 'Year of War.' You're optimized for efficiency, Arthur, but the 35th doesn't have a 1% flaw you can just poke with a needle. It's a meat grinder."

Arthur looked at the swirling blue mist of the portal. Age 41. The year he had expanded his business into the defense sector. He had profited from a border conflict he helped engineer.

"Meat grinders are just inefficient systems," Arthur said, stepping toward the mist. "And I've never met a system I couldn't lean out."

"Wait," Lirael reached out, her hand hovering near his shoulder but not touching it. "Vex has been talking to the Overseers. He's going to use a Challenge Scroll to enter the trial with you. It'll turn your solo mission into a competitive execution."

Arthur paused, his foot on the edge of the portal. He didn't look worried. He looked like a man who had just seen a competitor make a predictable, clumsy move.

"He's going to spend a Tier-2 Scroll just to spite me?" Arthur's shark-like grin returned. "Good. That means he's emotional. And in business, an emotional partner is the easiest one to bankrupt."

"Arthur, this isn't a boardroom!" Lirael hissed. "It's a Year of War. If he kills you inside, the System won't save you. You'll be erased."

"Then I suppose I'll have to make sure he's the one who ends up in the red," Arthur replied.

He stepped into the mist.

As the world dissolved, Arthur felt the weight of a heavy helmet on his head and the smell of sulfur in the air. But he didn't reach for a sword. He reached for his Ledger.

"If Vex wants to play soldier," Arthur whispered, "I'll show him how a CEO runs a war
