The forest felt different now.
Not just dangerous. Not just alive. But watching.
Soren clutched the glowing fox to his chest like a ticking bomb. "He's going to explode. He's going to evolve and explode. I'm going to explode. We're all going to explode."
Kael grabbed his shoulders. "Soren. Breathe."
"I CAN'T."
"Try."
"I CAN'T."
Lira stepped forward, frost‑wolf at her side. "We need to move. The catalyst is somewhere nearby."
Aldric groaned. "And if we don't find it, the fox goes unstable. And if the fox goes unstable, we fail. And if we fail, I will personally—"
Soren cut him off. "I KNOW. I KNOW. I KNOW."
The fox chirped, glowing brighter.
Soren screamed internally.
The Forest Reacts
The deeper they went, the stranger the forest became.
The trees hummed. The air shimmered. The ground pulsed faintly beneath their feet.
Soren whispered, "This is bad. This is very bad. This is the worst."
Kael scanned the surroundings. "The forest is reacting to the fox."
Lira nodded. "Evolution energy attracts wild beasts."
Soren squeaked. "Why?!"
"Because they want it," Lira said simply.
Soren nearly fainted. "I hate this place."
The fox chirped, glowing brighter.
Aldric snarled. "If that thing blinds me, I swear—"
Soren hugged the fox protectively. "Don't yell at him! He's fragile!"
The fox chirped indignantly.
Kael smirked. "He's not fragile."
Soren whispered, "I'm fragile."
The First Sign
A faint trail of golden motes drifted through the air, swirling like fireflies.
Lira pointed. "There. The catalyst's energy."
Aldric scoffed. "Finally."
Kael nodded. "Stay alert."
Soren whimpered. "I'm always alert. I'm constantly alert. I'm too alert."
The fox chirped and leapt from his arms, following the motes.
Soren panicked. "WAIT—DON'T RUN TOWARD THE MYSTICAL UNKNOWN—"
He chased after the fox.
The others followed.
The Clearing
They burst into a wide clearing bathed in soft golden light.
At the center stood a stone pedestal covered in ancient runes. Floating above it was a small, glowing object—shaped like a teardrop, shimmering with warm light.
Soren gasped. "Is that…?"
Lira nodded. "A Dawnseed. A rare evolution catalyst."
Aldric smirked. "Perfect. Grab it."
Kael held up a hand. "Wait."
Soren froze. "Wait? Why wait? Why are we waiting? Waiting is bad."
Kael pointed at the ground.
Soren looked down.
And screamed.
The clearing was covered in glowing runes—hundreds of them—forming a massive circle.
Lira's eyes widened. "A warding trap."
Aldric snarled. "Of course it is."
Soren whimpered. "I hate this place."
The fox chirped.
The Guardian
The runes lit up.
The ground trembled.
The pedestal cracked.
And something enormous rose from the earth.
A beast made of roots, stone, and glowing amber eyes. A forest guardian. An ancient protector.
Soren screamed. "NOPE. NOPE. NOPE."
Kael stepped forward. "Positions!"
Lira raised her hand. "Frost‑Wolf—prepare!"
Aldric smirked. "Finally. A real fight."
Soren hid behind Kael. "I'm not ready!"
Kael shoved him forward. "You never are."
The fox chirped and flickered to Soren's side, glowing brighter than ever.
The guardian roared.
The battle began.
Chaos (Soren's Natural Habitat)
Aldric charged first, lion cub blazing with golden fire.
The guardian swung a massive root‑arm.
Kael intercepted, spear crackling with lightning.
Lira summoned a wave of frost, freezing the ground beneath the guardian's feet.
Soren screamed. "WHAT DO I DO?!"
Kael shouted, "Support!"
"How?!"
"Use your beetle!"
Soren blinked. "My beetle?!"
The Lightwing Beetle buzzed out of his pocket, glowing brightly.
Soren pointed at the guardian. "Uh… distract it?"
The beetle buzzed aggressively.
The guardian blinked.
Then roared.
Soren screamed. "BAD IDEA!"
Lira shouted, "Fox—assist!"
The fox flickered, leaving afterimages everywhere, confusing the guardian.
Aldric smirked. "Good. Keep it off balance!"
Kael lunged, spear striking the guardian's leg.
The guardian staggered.
Lira raised her hand. "Ice Bind!"
Frost wrapped around the guardian's limbs.
Aldric shouted, "Leo—Sun Burst!"
The lion cub unleashed a burst of golden fire.
The guardian roared—
Cracked—
And collapsed.
Silence.
Soren blinked. "We… won?"
Kael nodded. "We won."
Aldric smirked. "Obviously."
Lira exhaled. "Good work."
Soren collapsed. "I hate this place."
The fox chirped proudly.
The Catalyst
The Dawnseed floated gently above the pedestal, glowing softly.
Soren approached it slowly. "This is it… right?"
Lira nodded. "Yes."
Aldric crossed his arms. "Give it to the fox."
Soren hesitated. "But… what if it's unstable?"
Kael placed a hand on his shoulder. "Trust him."
Soren looked at the fox.
The fox looked back.
Golden eyes bright.
Tail flicking.
Chirping softly.
Soren whispered, "Okay. Let's do this."
He held out the Dawnseed.
The fox touched it with its nose.
Light exploded.
Soren screamed.
Kael shielded him.
Lira stepped back.
Aldric cursed.
The forest shook.
The runes flared.
The fox glowed brighter and brighter—
And then—
Everything went white.
Evolution Begins
A screen appeared in the blinding light.
[EVOLUTION INITIATED]
Form: ???
Stability: Restored
Bond: Strong
Warning: Evolution in progress. Stand back.
Soren screamed. "STAND BACK FROM WHAT?!"
The fox's silhouette shifted.
Grew.
Split.
Changed.
Soren reached out. "Buddy—"
Kael grabbed him. "Don't touch it!"
The light intensified—
And the fox vanished inside it.
Soren's heart stopped.
"NO—!"
The light pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Then shattered like glass.
And something stepped out.
Something small.
Something glowing.
Something with—
Two tails.
